Overview

This standard is about forming and embellishing components for footwear or leathergoods. This can apply to operations carried out by hand or using machinery.

This includes selecting machinery, materials and foils, operating equipment or machinery, rectifying faulty splits or skives, forming and embellishing components that meet quality requirements, working to production schedules and minimising and disposing of waste.

This standard is for anyone who forms and embellishes components for footwear or leathergoods manufacture.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. make sure the work area is free from hazards at all times
  2. set up appropriate machines or equipment according to manufacturers' instructions and production schedules
  3. select and use materials that comply with production specifications
  4. select foils that are appropriate for the materials being used
  5. operate any machines or equipment in accordance with operating guidelines and manufacturers' instructions
  6. form and embellish components in line with production schedules
  7. produce embellished components that meet quality requirements
  8. identify and take appropriate action to rectify any incorrect splits or skives during the forming process
  9. work in ways that minimise waste at all times
  10. dispose of waste materials in line with environmental requirements
  11. leave the work area, machines and equipment safe, clean and secure
  12. comply with written instructions relating to forming and embellishing components
  13. complete required forms, records and other documentation
  14. work to legal requirements, standards and regulations, policies, procedures and professional codes at all times

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. appropriate machinery for different components
  2. common faults that may be encountered during embellishing
  3. how to reject worn, faulty or defective tools and who to notify for their replacement
  4. typical faults and problems associated with the different components
  5. characteristics of the various materials used for embellishing
  6. the typical faults that can arise and how to respond to them
  7. who the responsible person is, in the event of problems
  8. the organisation's policies about ethical production and sustainability
  9. the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
  10. the organisation's rules, codes, guidelines and standards

  11. statutory responsibilities under health and safety and environmental legislation and regulations

  12. common hazards in the work area and workplace procedures for dealing with them
  13. regulations and guidelines for storage and disposal of waste materials
  14. the potential hazards associated with the different types of machine
