Overview

This standard is for those who shape materials for footwear or leathergood manufacture.  Shaping can be achieved by splitting materials or by skiving - cutting off thin layers.  Skiving and splitting can be carried out by hand or by machine.

This includes choosing suitable tools, operating tools or machinery, following accepted processes, checking end product against specification and minimising, storing  and disposing of waste. 

This standard is for anyone who shapes material for footwear or leathergoods manufacture through skiving or splitting.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. make sure the work area is free from hazards at all times
  2. choose tools that are suitable for skiving or splitting operations to be carried out
  3. fit tools to machines in line with manufacturers' instructions
  4. operate tools and machinery in accordance with operating guidelines and safety requirements
  5. carry out skiving or splitting in line with accepted processes
  6. check that skived or split material conforms to specification
  7. work in ways that minimise waste at all times
  8. store and dispose of all waste materials in line with environmental requirements
  9. make machines safe and clean after use
  10. comply with written instructions relating to skiving and splitting operations
  11. complete required forms, records and other documentation
  12. work to legal requirements, standards and regulations, policies, procedures and professional codes at all times

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the functions of different tools for shaping
  2. how to reject worn, faulty or defective tools and who to notify for their replacement
  3. hazards involved in operating machines and how to operate them safely and effectively
  4. problems and hazards that can be encountered when setting up machines
  5. the importance of storing tools safely and correctly
  6. the different characteristics of the various materials
  7. machines to use for different components
  8. characteristic flaws and faults that may be found in different materials
  9. the organisation's policies about ethical production and sustainability
  10. the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
  11. organisation's rules, codes, guidelines and standards
  12. statutory responsibilities under health and safety and environmental legislation and regulations
  13. common hazards in the work area and workplace procedures for dealing with them

  14. safety precautions to be taken

  15. the potential hazards involved in the machine shaping operations 
  16. the organisation's policy on storage of tools
