Overview
This standard is for those who carry out moulding operations to produce components for use in production of footwear and leathergoods.
This includes selecting moulds and materials, setting up, operating, adjusting and closing down machinery, maintaining required levels of productivity, removing surplus material and placing moulded components for next stages.
This standard is for anyone who moulds components for footwear or leathergoods.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- make sure the work area is free from hazards at all times
- select moulds that comply with information on work tickets
- transport moulds using appropriate lifting aids
- select appropriate materials for moulding
- set up and operate machines to produce required components
- identify and make necessary adjustments to machine settings to achieve quality standards
- work in ways that minimise waste at all times
- remove all surplus materials in line with the organisation's requirements
- ensure that components are placed to avoid damage and assist the next stages of production
- maintain agreed levels of productivity
- carry out close down procedures to leave work area safe and secure
- report work which cannot be rectified to relevant people
- comply with written instructions relating to component moulding
- complete required forms, records and other documentation
- work to legal requirements, standards and regulations, policies, procedures and professional codes at all times
Knowledge and Understanding

- parts of work tickets relevant to the work
- varying characteristics of materials used for moulding, and the implications of not selecting correct materials
- the organisation's tolerances for the addition of regrind
- best practice for using mould release agents
- appropriate lifting gear and the safety implications
- the implications of failing to achieve quality and production requirements
- how to deal with sub-standard components
- how to deal with waste materials
- why components must be placed carefully for the next process
- procedure for set up, operation and closedown of machines and equipment
- the organisation's policies about ethical production and sustainability
- the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
- the organisation's rules, codes, guidelines and standards
- the organisation's quality standards and production targets applicable to the process
- common hazards in the work area and work place procedures for dealing with them
- how to make the work area safe and secure
- statutory responsibilities under health and safety and environmental legislation and regulations
- common hazards in the work area and workplace procedures for dealing with them
- manufacturers' instructions relating to machinery and equipment
