Overview

This standard is for those who assemble and fix leather components for footwear and leathergoods.  This can be carried out by hand or machine.

This includes selecting components, selecting tools and equipment, resolving issues, assembling and fixing components and disposing of waste.

The standard is for anyone who assembles and fixes components

for footwear or leathergoods, either by hand or machine.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. make sure the work area is free from hazards at all times
  2. choose components that meet product specifications
  3. select appropriate tools, equipment, adhesives and solvents for assembly, fixing and forming
  4. identify any factors affecting planned assembly, fixing and forming techniques
  5. remedy any wear and tear on tools and equipment within your area of expertise
  6. report any faulty or unsuitable components or issues with assembly techniques, tools or equipment that you cannot rectify to appropriate people
  7. check the work space is ready for assembly and fixing work
  8. use tools and equipment in line with safety requirements
  9. assemble and fix components in line with agreed processes
  10. work in ways that minimise waste at all times
  11. complete work in accordance with product specifications and production schedules
  12. dispose of waste and surplus materials, solvents and adhesives in line with safety and environmental requirements
  13. comply with written instructions relating to assembly and fixing
  14. complete required forms, records and other documentation
  15. work to legal requirements, standards and regulations, policies, procedures and professional codes at all times

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to interpret product specifications
  2. where components are stored
  3. what constitutes unacceptable deviations from component specifications
  4. who should be notified of production problems or faulty components
  5. details about components used in production processes
  6. who will perform next stages in production
  7. what constitutes acceptable assembled components
  8. the organisation's policies about ethical production and sustainability
  9. the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
  10. the organisation's rules, codes, guidelines and standards
  11. statutory responsibilities under health and safety and environmental legislation and regulations
  12. common hazards in the work area and workplace procedures for dealing with them
  13. safety precautions to be taken
  14. the hazards associated with different fixing materials and processes
  15. the regulations for use, storage and disposal of solvents and adhesives
  16. appropriate tools including those for cutting, positional marking, decorative marking, staining, fixing and forming
