Overview

This standard is for those who cut materials for use in the manufacture of footwear or leathergoods.  Cutting can be carried out by hand or by machine.

This includes calculating required components, selecting and sorting materials, preparing and using tools, cutting shaped components to meet the requirements of safety, productivity and quality, and minimising waste.

This standard is for anyone who cuts materials for footwear or leathergoods manufacture, either by hand or machine.

 


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. make sure the work area is free from hazards at all times
  2. check information on work tickets with appropriate people
  3. calculate the number of components needed for production
  4. select and sort materials required for the work
  5. make sure tools are safe and clean for use on material
  6. check quality and characteristics of material against required standards before starting to cut
  7. use tools and equipment appropriate for the material and cutting requirements
  8. set up, operate and close down tools and equipment in line with manufacturers' instructions
  9. cut material without damaging self, others, the knife and other equipment
  10. organise cutting so that imperfections are avoided and wastage is minimised
  11. meet the organisation's usage tolerances for efficient pattern interlocking
  12. identify and respond to imperfections, defects and damage due to mishandling
  13. produce batches of components to match work tickets and the organisation's production targets
  14. make repairs to tools and equipment that are within your area of expertise, reporting those you do not have the authority to repair to appropriate people
  15. dispose of waste materials in line with safety requirements
  16. return re-useable materials without delay
  17. sort work in appropriate order for following production stages
  18. place completed work in locations that minimise risk of damage
  19. comply with written instructions relating to cutting material
  20. complete required forms, records and other documentation
  21. work to legal requirements, standards and regulations, policies, procedures and professional code at all times

  1. styles of footwear and leathergoods  currently being produced
  2. how data on work tickets relate to the work and associated production schedules
  3. how to safely set up and close down cutting and associated equipment in the work station
  4. which equipment is needed for cutting

  7. common cutting methods to ensure maximum usage and minimum wastage
  8. the organisation's cutting efficiencies with regard to the material being cut
  9. the organisation's policies about ethical production and sustainability
  10. the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
  11. the common quality imperfections associated with the materials being cut
  12. the main characteristics of materials, how to identify them and what they mean for cutting and subsequent operations
  13. the implications of using defective and dirty tools and machines on materials
  14. responsibilities and lines of reporting within the work area
  15. the organisation's rules, codes, guidelines and standards
  16. equipment operating procedures and manufacturers' instructions
  17. statutory responsibilities under health and safety and environmental legislation and regulations
  18. common hazards in the work area and workplace procedures for dealing with them
  19. the health and safety procedures for handling the tools and equipment
  20. the organisation's procedures with regard to material re-usage and disposal
  21. quality standards required by the organisation and the reporting procedures 
  22. the organisation's procedures for filling out documentation on work completed
