Overview
This standard is about using computer-aided design software to design footwear or leathergoods.
It includes confirming design requirements, setting up, using and closing CAD software, producing alternative designs, providing clear and accurate information about designs, recording details of alterations both before and after factory production trials, agreeing final designs and completing required paperwork.
This standard is for anyone involved in using CAD systems to design footwear or leathergoods products.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- make sure work areas are free from hazards at all times
- liaise with relevant people to confirm design requirements
- set up and operate computer hardware and software in accordance with supplier instructions and the organisation's requirements
- use CAD software to create designs that meet design requirements
- create designs that take account of pattern cutting and grading requirements
- manipulate and alter images on screen to test ideas that are within scope of required designs
- print off alternative designs to present a range of options suitable for production
- give clear and accurate information about the differences between alternative design options to relevant people
- provide information about designs that is required by those making factory production trials
- record full details of any agreed alterations to agreed designs before and after factory production trial inspections
- confirm final designs with appropriate people
- back up CAD systems before turning them off
- comply with written instructions relating to product design at all times
- complete required forms, records and other documentation
- work to legal requirements, standards and regulations, policies, procedures and professional codes at all times
Knowledge and Understanding

- the principles of CAD systems
- the main design capabilities of the CAD systems with which you are working
- how to undertake modelling and testing using CAD
- the main differences and advantages of 2D and 3D CAD
- the information required to get started with designing concepts using CAD
- information about design requirements including the scope of designs, when designs are required and the main design features
- how to start, operate and close down CAD systems
- the principles of pattern cutting and grading
- the importance of pattern trials
- how to explain the differences between alternative designs clearly and accurately
- the importance of recording clear information about required alterations and amendments before and after factory production trial inspection
- what information is required by those making factory production trials
- the organisation's policies about ethical production and sustainability
- the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
- the organisation's rules, codes, guidelines and standards
- equipment operating procedures
- statutory responsibilities under health and safety and environmental legislation and regulations
- common hazards in the work area and workplace procedures for dealing with them
- manufacturers' instructions for using computer hardware and software
- who to liaise with, and when and how to communicate with them
