Overview

This standard is about developing technology roadmaps. A technology roadmap is a graphical representation that provides a multi-layered time-based chart, bringing together various technology perspectives into a single structured visual diagram. The layered structure of roadmaps helps to distinguish between and synchronise innovation and product development projects with product releases, upgrades and commercial milestones.

This includes modelling the evolution of the organisation (including market, product and technology perspectives) on a time basis, together with key linkages between the layers. It is customised for the specific organisational context and provides a point of reference and communication tool across functional and organisational boundaries.

This involves applying the roadmapping process activities for planning, development and implementation of technology roadmaps. The process approach follows different stages of technology assessment; where we are now, where do we want to be, what the barriers to progression are and what needs to be done to overcome them. This also includes the determination of how the organisation should react with the evolution of its products and/or services to ensure that the required technologies will be available and supported when needed.

This standard is for those who develop and deliver technology roadmapping projects.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. define the scope, objectives and boundaries for the technology roadmapping project with stakeholders

  2. identify the product or service technology domain that will be the focus of the roadmap development

  3. create a phased development plan to deliver organisational technology roadmapping projects as required
  4. communicate the vision of the technology roadmapping project to stakeholders

  6. identify the current organisational product and technology gaps and recommend areas for review to address these

  7. review identified technology options, select potential technology solutions and map their maturity time-lines to roadmap development

  8. link skills requirements to technology resources to deliver future market opportunities and time to market

  9. document technology roadmaps using approved methods

  10. review and validate roadmap content and key messages
  11. consolidate organisational roadmaps into portfolios of related enterprise roadmaps
  12. publish and communicate roadmap outcomes tailored for specific audiences

  3. the value of the technology roadmapping process and outcomes to informing product and process strategies

  4. the capabilities of the organisation relative to its current and planned technology environment

  5. how technology roadmapping can help to align technology and commercial perspectives to develop improved strategies
  6. the approaches for implementing technology roadmapping at the innovation, business and product levels
  7. how to implement technology roadmapping projects

  8. the application of roadmapping as a management tool

  9. how to apply visual design principles to support the communication of technology roadmaps

  10. the issues around defining 'technology', 'innovation' and 'innovation management' for an organisation

  11. the theories, concepts, frameworks and models used to assess and understand technology-related resources

  12. the diversity of types of innovation, innovators and innovation settings
  13. the nature and extent of technological change and innovation
  14. the legal, social, ethical and professional issues that can arise when implementing new technologies
