Overview

This standard covers the competences needed to deploy and integrate IIoT solutions into existing and new IIoT networks. This includes deploying the IIoT solution across its various layers, performing IIoT integrations across IT networks and ensuring its reliability, scalability and availability. This also includes the development of tools and processes for continuous integration and delivery.

IIoT deployment involves planning the installation of the hardware and software infrastructure elements to implement the IIoT solution. It includes close collaborate with the IIoT solution architect and system designers to deliver the intended IIoT system and operational functionality.

Those involved in IIoT deployment should have a broad knowledge of the IIoT system architecture, design, components, device/cloud integration and embedded software.

This standard is for those who deploy and integrate IIoT solutions.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. identify the deployment and integration needs of the IIoT infrastructure solution from the IIoT requirements specification, architecture and design documentation

  2. evaluate and document current IT networks and processes prior to IIoT deployment and integration

  3. assess the need to consult external vendors to perform IIoT deployment and integration activities

  4. define the steps IIoT teams need to perform during the IIoT deployment and integration activities and engage with them to set out team responsibilities

  5. develop an IIoT system deployment and integration plan to detail the sequence of activities, timescales and responsibilities in line with organisational procedures

  6. produce deployment models and undertake prototyping of IIoT systems prior to installation to aid planning and develop domain awareness

  7. evaluate risks and impact to ensure IIoT deployment does not interfere with existing IT systems or data

  8. carry out deployment and installation of IIoT devices and hardware/software infrastructure in line with the deployment plan and organisational requirements

  9. perform integration and configuration of smart devices, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), networks, databases and cloud infrastructure

  10. implement and configure software services including data integration, cloud service integration and communications in line with the IIoT solution requirements

  11. perform quality and functional testing of the IIoT implementation using organisational test procedures

  12. document all IIoT deployment and integration activities in line with organisational standards

  13. perform deployment reviews to update best practice documentation for future IIoT deployment projects

  14. obtain sign-off of the installed IIoT system from specified individuals in line with organisational procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

1. how to interpret IIoT system requirements to prepare for deployment activities 2. the organisational policies, procedures and guidelines which relate to performing IIoT deployment and integration activities  3. the organisational policies and procedures for documenting IIoT deployment and integration requirements and delivery procedures 4. how to document current IT networks and processes 5. who to involve while performing IIoT deployment and integration activities 6. the business processes and technical capabilities of IIoT systems 7. how to define the stages of IIoT implementation and develop a deployment plan 8. the dependencies and the risks associated with the IIoT deployment and system integration 9. the distributed nature of IT and IIoT systems and devices 10. the technical features of the various components of an IIoT solution 11. the different data sources, data integration processes and techniques required for IIoT deployment and integration 12. the industry standard networking and PLC systems and their impact on the performance of an IIoT system installation  13. how to work on industry standard operating systems that support IIoT platforms 14. how to integrate cloud computing platforms in IIoT solution deployments and configure their affiliated services 15. how to troubleshoot and resolve IIoT deployment issues 16. how to collaborate with suppliers and organisational teams for IIoT deployment 17. how to provide IIoT deployment updates and awareness training to stakeholders 18. how to maintain security compliance whilst undertaking IIoT deployment and integration activities 19. how to identify and evaluate risks across IIoT deployment and integration activities
