Overview

This standard is about configuring a digital system through selecting and adding digital devices to form a small networked digital system.

This involves keeping software up to date, automating backup procedures, and adopting cloud data and application services. It also includes setting access privileges for software restoring data and dealing with routine faults and error messages.

This standard is for those who need to undertake digital system configuration to meet their own needs or as part of their duties.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. Update software for devices to maintain performance 

  2. Connect devices to Wi-Fi hotspots to provide online connectivity during roaming

  3. Implement automated backup routines to provide data protection

  4. Install and configure software applications from cloud or digital media to meet new requirements

  5. Implement cloud data storage to provide improved data accessibility 

  6. Check for and implement operating system and software updates and patches to keep software updated

  7. Implement updates to keep component software drivers up to date

  8. Respond to error messages to identify problems in digital systems

  9. Take appropriate action to resolve routine IT problems in line with organisational guidelines 

  10. Set up user accounts and permissions on digital devices and software applications to maintain privacy and security

  11. Restore digital devices to clean factory settings in line with vendor procedures

  12. Restore data files from stored backup data in line with organisational procedures


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. How to check for updates and apply these to software applications

  2. The steps involved in automating backup procedures and how to apply them

  3. How to identify the current operating system version and device specification (processor, memory and disk drive capacity) for  a digital device

  4. How to install cloud based data and application software services

  5. How to locate and install  and update peripheral device drivers

  6. How to distinguish routine from non-routine faults
  7. How to report and respond to hardware and software problems
  8. How to locate and use system troubleshooting guides
  9. The tests that can be used to check that digital systems are working correctly
  10. The importance of backing up files and folders and when to do this
  11. How to locate and load backup data to restore files
