Overview

This standard is about managing system requirements engineering (RE).

IT business analysts apply structured approaches to identify business problems, and investigate, analyse and communicate requirements to improve processes, systems and services.

Managing RE involves managing requirements throughout the life cycle and ensuring full traceability. This includes working with stakeholders, planning and scoping requirements, managing requirements workflow, monitoring requirements development and outcomes and managing changes to requirements. It also includes contributing to the development of organisational policies and procedures for RE.

This standard is for those who need to manage RE as part of their duties.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. Develop and implement RE plans to guide requirements activities and outputs
  2. Manage requirements workflow and change control in line with organisational procedures
  3. Apply the organisations quality criteria to check the quality of requirements in line with organisational standards
  4. Negotiate with stakeholders to manage competing priorities and conflicts
  5. Implement requirements traceability methods to track each requirement
  6. Implement version control and change control to manage changes to requirements in line with organisational procedures
  7. Define organisational tools and techniques for RE

  8. Contribute to the development of organisational policies and procedures for RE

You need to know and understand:

  1. Why robust management of requirements is necessary

  2. The process of requirements governance

  3. The importance of planning for RE

  4. How to develop and implement an RE plan

  5. The relationship between requirements planning and requirements governance
  6. The rationale for requirements traceability and the organisational approach to achieving traceability
  7.  The organisations quality criteria for requirements and how to apply them
  8. How to engage with stakeholders to prioritise requirements and resolve conflicts
  9. The requirements management technologies used to support requirements workflow, approvals, base-lining, and change control and how to apply them
  10. How to implement and control the requirements management repository to store and manage requirements
  11. How to base-line requirements
  12. How to assess requirements changes and implement controls to manage changes using version control and change control
  13. The steps involved in approving requirements with stakeholders and how to apply them
  14. How to develop and implement  organisational policies and procedures for RE
