What this standard is about

This standard covers providing guidance to those managing projects and embedding lean tools and techniques as part of the organisation's continuous improvement.

You will need to understand lean tools and techniques and be able to use them in project management.  You will need to identify colleagues' support requirements and agree a plan of action to effectively support them in embedding lean tools and techniques.

Who is this standard for

This standard is for those who are experienced in lean tools and techniques and project management and will be responsible for providing guidance and support to other colleagues as part of the organisation's continuous improvement programme.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. Carry out an initial assessment to identify the support needed by colleagues to use lean tools and techniques in project management
  2. Work with colleagues to identify what support and guidance they need throughout the process
  3. Check that colleagues understand what they have to do to embed lean techniques into project management and why it is important
  4. Provide guidance and support to colleagues where appropriate
  5. Work with colleagues to share experiences on using lean tools and techniques in project management across sites or work areas
  6. Agree a plan for monitoring progress with colleagues
  7. Work with individuals to evaluate their skills and performance in project management
  8. Provide feedback to colleagues at an appropriate time and place

You need to know and understand:

  1. The methods used to identify the support and guidance needed by colleagues
  2. The techniques you can use to support colleagues to embed lean tools and techniques in project management
  3. Lean tools and techniques available or used within the organisation
  4. Project management tools available or used within the organisation
  5. How colleague performance can affect the achievement of implementing continuous improvement
  6. The implications of not embedding lean techniques into projects
  7. The level and type of guidance and supervision which colleagues need
  8. How to present plans to colleagues to gain understanding and commitment
  9. How to work with colleagues to develop a culture of sharing experiences
  10. The importance of involving staff throughout the process gaining their motivation
  11. Performance and success measures used within the organisation
  12. The importance of supporting and providing feedback to colleagues in a constructive way
