URN: SKSVFX5
Business Sectors (Suites): Visual Effects
Developed by: ScreenSkills
Approved on: 2024

Overview

This standard is about modelling, texturing or painting the assets that will be needed for VFX. These could be characters, creatures, props, environments, or backgrounds.

This standard is for VFX Artists and those involved with digital matte painting, environments, look development, modelling and texture development.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. analyse briefs, scripts, visual references and technical and production parameters to determine what is needed
  2. create models, textures or paintings that conform to the developed look and technical requirements and are fit for purpose
  3. check and plan for continuity of models, textures or paintings and make sure they are fit for purpose for all required camera positions and angles
  4. evaluate the quality of assets you have modelled, textured or painted on their own, in relation to other assets and within the context in which they will be used
  5. ensure assets developed match any on-set versions
  6. respond to feedback about work and changing requirements and make refinements as needed
  7. present work to others in ways that enable them to visualise its look and potential
  8. supply work in appropriate formats that can be used by others in the pipeline
  9. prepare and store assets in line with production requirements and schedules to enable the next stage of production to proceed

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the creative style, overall concept and level of detail required for the production
  2. reference materials such as a library of assets, that can be used to ensure work is accurate and meets the brief
  3. the intended use and context of the assets you create within the technical pipeline and the importance of this
  4. the principles and techniques of digital animation, such as hi and low resolution modelling, procedural modelling, meshing, colouring, matte making, digital sculpting
  5. the effects of camera positions, angles, lens types and lighting in relation to objects and environments
  6. surface properties of materials, different types of textures, lighting and other effects that can be applied to 3D objects and environments
  7. illustration techniques and drawing skills
  8. the theory and importance of colour, lighting and cinematography
  9. the importance of continuity
  10. how to exploit the potential of industry-standard digital animation software for digital elements
  11. how to evaluate if set up of elements is fit for purpose
  12. how to assess and evaluate the broader impact of feedback across the project and multiple sequences.
  13. how to plan and identify efficiencies in build and process where possible and viable
  14. the importance of maintaining data security and following production requirements, timelines, guidelines and file structures
