Overview
This standard is about ensuring the quality of VFX work. Output quality can be both creative and technical. It involves working collaboratively in an ongoing dynamic process to meet production requirements.
This standard is most likely to be applicable to VFX Supervisors, VFX Assistant Supervisors and Producers.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- identify the artistic and technical expectations and requirements of the work
- confirm how the use of technology will impact on the work
- communicate expectations to those involved
- check and confirm that quality control processes are in place and are understood by those who need to use them
- assess quality at appropriate times to enable work to progress to schedule
- make judgements about quality of work
- identify work that is not of the required quality and put collaborative measures in place to rectify it
- where it is not possible to achieve work within the scope of the project, find achievable solutions that are acceptable to the client
- work collaboratively and iteratively with other departments across all phases of the production to achieve high quality results
- check and confirm that work is completed to requirements
- liaise with third parties over technical checks and final quality checks (QC) in conform and grade
- apply quality assurance processes and procedures, which may involve company or production-specific pipelines using bespoke tools, tests and exercises
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the overall process required to produce the final product and the role of the people involved
- where each contributing element of the quality assurance process sits in the overall process and how they are linked and dependent on each other
- what format the work should be in at different stages of the process
- the quality checks (QC) and reviews that are in place
- when and how to review quality
- the importance of reviewing quality according to production schedules
- how to assess quality against expected artistic and technical standards
- how to assess the quality and artistic results of animation, rendering, lighting and compositing
- who needs to be involved with assessing or evaluating quality both within and outside the organisation
- how to present information to others in ways that they will understand and accept
- how to apply quality focus that promotes continuous improvement, innovation and creativity to the VFX development process
