Overview

This standard is about capturing the data that is needed as reference material by VFX artists. Data may be in many forms including close range photographs of small items or people, long range photographs of environments, witness cameras, theodolite readings, Lidar or Cyber scans and live data.

This is most likely to be carried out by the VFX Technical Assistant Director, Supervisor or Producer working for the facility or vendor.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. identify production and post production data that needs to be collected
  2. collaborate with other departments to ensure data they are responsible for is being recorded
  3. collate and verify data that exists within other departments
  4. make sure you are on set at appropriate times to collect the data required
  5. communicate your data collection requirements with on-set staff to ensure you have the opportunity to collect the reference data you need
  6. be accountable in pre-production meetings, on set and during plate, scan, reference and/or capture shoots for enabling the collection of data
  7. record information relating to how the data was captured
  8. liaise with VFX team members and respond to requests and feedback related to data capture
  9. deliver work in line with production schedules and milestones

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. who the data is for and to what use they will put it
  2. the implications for VFX work of data not being accurately and correctly recorded
  3. the data from pre-production and generated during production and the need to verify it against the actual shoot
  4. data required such as on set VFX data, High Dynamic Range (HDR), Standard Dynamic Range (SDR)
  5. advising, supervising and gathering information on all VFX aspects
  6. the physical and virtual data needed for modelling, texturing, environment, look development, lighting, matchmoving and painting
  7. how to interpret production schedules to identify appropriate times to be on set
  8. how to take measurements by hand and when it is appropriate to do so
  9. the advantages, disadvantages and process for taking close range photographs and when to use these
  10. the advantages, disadvantages and process for taking high dynamic range photographs and when to use these
  11. the advantages and disadvantages of LIDAR scans and when to use these
  12. the advantages and disadvantages of Cyberscans and when to use these
  13. the advantages and disadvantages of theodolite surveys and when to use these
  14. what information needs to be recorded to support the data captured and why it is important
  15. roles, responsibilities and chains of command
