This standard is about carrying out basic in-house maintenance and conducting first-line troubleshooting to identify and diagnose faults on automation systems; to ensure their safety and operational reliability.

It involves completing regular checks, carrying out routine maintenance and reporting issues that cannot be fixed, working in line with maintenance protocols and safety procedures.

This standard is for Automation technicians and Scenic automation technicians.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. select tools, equipment and materials for the component you are working on
  2. carry out maintenance checks in line with agreed schedules and manufacturer's instructions
  3. perform routine maintenance on mechanical, control, and fluid power systems
  4. identify and diagnose common faults in automation systems
  5. follow procedures for any items or components that need immediate attention
  6. report any problems in line with organisational procedures, escalating if specialist help is needed
  7. use tools, equipment and materials according to manufacturers' instructions and in line with health and safety requirements
  8. work in line with manufacturer's instructions and legislation, organisational requirements and codes of practice so that completed work is safe, serviceable and meets performance requirements
  9. record information about checks and maintenance carried out in organisational systems

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. maintenance schedules
  2. maintenance protocols for automation systems
  3. how to obtain and interpret manufacturer's instructions and why you must follow them
  4. the tools, equipment and materials required for maintenance and how to use them
  5. the range of maintenance or repair needs you are likely to find in automation systems and how to identify them
  6. how to use diagnostics for electrical, mechanical, and control systems
  7. safety measures that apply during maintenance and troubleshooting
  8. own level of responsibility and competence for maintenance and when and who to escalate issues to
  9. legislation, organisational requirements and codes of practice that apply to the maintenance of automation systems
  10. how to maintain maintenance records
