Overview

This standard is about using the rehearsal period to make sure the implemented sound design will achieve the desired effect. You will need to refine it as necessary and find practical or technical solutions to problems in advance of the press and opening night.

You will be required to prepare detailed and accurate plots of the sound aspects of the production and update them during rehearsals. You must identify where problems occur, and make and respond positively to recommendations to changes that need to be made in order to meet the design requirements.

This standard is for anyone involved in making sure sound meets requirements during rehearsal.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. attend stage technical and dress rehearsals when required
  2. check and confirm the sound design provided meets production needs when combined with other aspects of production
  3. liaise with costume department, wigs, hair and make up and performers to establish positions for personal wireless equipment
  4. make sure requested alterations to sound cues or microphone levels are carried out without delay
  5. suggest solutions to problems in achieving sound designs that are feasible and in keeping with production requirements
  6. report problems in implementing sound designs to relevant people
  7. plan for back up procedures to deal with equipment failure in performance so that sound plot requirements can still be met
  8. consult with creative and technical staff to agree changes to equipment plans and sound plots
  9. make agreed alterations to existing sound plots, equipment plans and cue lists which maintain the overall integrity of the sound design
  10. confirm that stage management have accurate sound plots with cue positions incorporated into production running lists

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the difference between rehearsals, technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals and previews and the role the sound designer and sound technician can play in these
  2. the importance of the rehearsal period in testing whether particular cues work
  3. how to identify onstage locations from which effects will operate, and whether new cues need to be added
  4. problems and improvements that can be identified during rehearsal
  5. the sound control position and the capabilities and operation of sound equipment, including fault finding and first line maintenance
  6. agreed backup procedures and how to operate them
  7. the importance of maintaining the overall integrity of sound design for a production
  8. the importance of providing rehearsal material and when it is appropriate to do so
  9. stage terminology and its meanings including upstage, downstage, stage left and stage right
  10. the importance of liaising at an early stage about radio mic positions and experimenting with these in rehearsal
  11. the importance of plotting, modifying sound cues and documenting alterations to plots
  12. the importance of stage management having an up to date list of sound cues including cue points in scripts
  13. the importance of consulting with other creative and technical staff during rehearsal
  14. the importance of archiving plots for future use
