Overview
This standard is about using the correct procedures for planning and implementing the temporary electrical distribution systems to meet production requirements.
This standard is for anyone who is involved in connecting temporary electrical systems and equipment for theatre and live productions.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- connect electrical systems and equipment in line with regulatory requirements and industry standards (BS7909)
- identify and address any foreseeable hazards in line with regulatory requirements and industry standards
- select and use Personal Protective Equipment and required tools for the job
- identify appropriate means of electrical isolation prior to connection
- carry out isolation procedures to ensure a safe connection in accordance with electrical regulations and approved procedures
- carry out tests and document results during the process
- make temporary connections in accordance with specifications and comply with legislation, organisational requirements, codes of practice and current industry standards
- check that connections are electrically and mechanically sound and identified in line with industry standards
- take action to remedy any identified defects after connection has taken place
- complete documentation legislation, organisational requirements and codes of practice
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- how to interpret diagrams and drawings to facilitate the connection of electrical systems and equipment
- the main types of different electrical connections and their advantages and limitations
- the procedures for a safe isolation
- the implications for relevant parties of carrying out an isolation
- the procedures for the connection of single and multi-phase circuits
- the procedures for proving a connection is electrically and mechanically sound
- why it is important to test individual elements prior to connection to system
- what is meant by PAT testing, when it is required and how it should be carried out.
- how to establish which connections in circuits and protective conductors including connections to terminals are suitable
- the implications on the choice of connections with regard to permanent or temporary purposes
- the requirements of joints and connections to be of strength and conductance to allow for the passage of fault currents and to prevent corrosion
- legislation, organisational requirements and codes of practice for completion of documentation
- the importance of using personal protective equipment (PPE) and tools for specific jobs
- legislation, organisational requirements and codes of practice for carrying out an assessment of safe systems of work including permits to work
- legislation, organisational requirements and codes of practice for reporting any potentially dangerous situations or incidents
- current industry standards for temporary electrical systems for productions
- the principles of electrical theory which allow for the safe connection of electrical systems and equipment
