Operate plant or machinery to access, lift and transfer set pieces and items
Overview
This standard is about operating plant and machinery, such as forklift vehicles, scissor lifts, telescopic handlers, or cherry pickers to access, lift and transfer set pieces. It requires safe operation and handling of plant and machinery.
This standard covers the knowledge of and operating within the PUWER – Provision and use of work equipment regulations 1998, and LOLER – Lifting operations and lifting equipment regulations 1998.
This standard is for stagehands and standby stagehands.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- identify and plan work for which you need to operate plant and machinery
- check and agree the sequence of the work activity with other colleagues
- check ground conditions are suitable for the safe operation of plant or equipment
- obtain plant and machinery for the work activity
- prepare, position and secure equipment for the work according to manufacturer's instructions and health and safety procedures
- use personal protective equipment (PPE) equipment as required
- comply with organisational procedures to minimise damage to the work and surrounding area
- ensure that access to the equipment is restricted to authorised colleagues
- manoeuvre, position and set load down in line with production requirements and health and safety procedures
- shut down plant and machinery safely and leave in a secure position for the next user
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- how to interpret relevant documentation related to the plant or machinery operations and the work to be carried out
- types and characteristics of plant and machinery and their suitability to carry out the work
- how to organise the sequence of the work activity with others
procedures for checking and communicating information with colleagues
the personal protective equipment (PPE) to be worn, such as ear protectors
procedures and actions to take in the event of accident or emergency
how to operate all plant and machinery according to manufacturer's instructions and safety procedures
how to identify obstructions and environmental considerations
risks, hazards, and conditions that affect the equipment safety and security
parking and securing requirements for the equipment and machinery
