Lift, transfer and strike set pieces and items
Overview
This standard is about lifting and transferring set pieces into the position required using safe and efficient means, and striking sets at the end of the production.
It requires that you know the size and function of the items to be moved, how to ensure they are moved safely and securely, and that you do not overload transport equipment.
It requires manoeuvring the items around on trailers in tight places and disposing of those items that are no longer needed once production on that part of the set has ended.
This standard is for stagehands, chargehands and supervisor.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- work in line with the production schedule
- identify the form of transport suitable for the items and check that it is available
- coordinate the work activity with other team members
- ensure activities are conducted safely and efficiently
- pack items safely and correctly to avoid damage
- move loads into position using suitable equipment to ensure their safe transport
- secure the loads correctly for transporting
- ensure trailers are attached securely to vehicles
- transport set pieces safely around the studio or directly into storage using skates
- float windbags and set pieces in and out of position as directed, using appropriate equipment
- manoeuvre vehicles and trailers, avoiding hazards such as cables, workstations, other set pieces and other workers while doing so
- unload deliveries using appropriate handling techniques and machinery in accordance with health and safety regulations
- retain set pieces in line with production requirements
- use appropriate tools and equipment to remove set pieces
- operate plant and machinery safely to strike set pieces
- ensure all waste is recycled or disposed of following the relevant waste regulation and legislation
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the production schedule for the work
- the roles and responsibilities of other members of the team
- the characteristics of the items being transported and suitable methods of transportation
- how to pack items safely for transportation
- the designated unloading locations for deliveries
- how to move loads manually without personal injury
- how to secure windbags to 'A' frame trailers
the weight limits of vehicles and equipment
basic knot tying techniques for set pieces and their suitability for the job
how to identify risks and hazards to the work activity
how and when to inform the production team of any hindrance to safe operation
the hazards of manoeuvring and transporting items in the workplace, and how to minimise the risks
own responsibilities under the Health and Safety statutory requirements
how to remove hazards, when required, avoiding injury to self or others
whether sets are to be disposed of or pack struck
the quickest and safest route to remove the set from the stage
the appropriate tools for dismantling the set and how to use these
which items can be recycled or disposed of, and the relevant recycling or disposal methods
waste regulations and legislation for disposal and recycling
