Overview

​This standard is about setting up and using fixed or transportable machinery when producing products or assembling them on film and TV sets. This could include woodworking machinery like circular saws, planers, thicknessers, band saws and mortises. It could also include metal working saws, grinders and drills. You will also be expected to maintain the equipment in a serviceable condition by, for example, changing saw blades or grinding discs. You are expected to undertake activities like planning timber, cutting timber and manufactured sheets as well as cutting or drilling and tapping non-ferrous metal.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. ​interpret instructions and specifications for the work to be undertaken
  2. select the carpentry tools and equipment to undertake the work
  3. report when tools, equipment and materials are not immediately available or are not in the correct condition
  4. prepare the carpentry  tools and equipment for use
  5. identify the applications for which carpentry tools and equipment are required
  6. protect the work area from damage at all times
  7. use tools and equipment safely and leave them in a serviceable condition
  8. dispose of waste  in line with organisational procedures
  9. leave the area where you have been working in a clean and tidy condition
  10. comply with legal, statutory and organisational requirements to maintain safe work practices
  11. complete the work within deadline to maintain production schedules

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. ​how to obtain and interpret the information required to manufacture routine products
  2. the types of carpentry tools, equipment and materials required
  3. how to change saw blades, discs etc. so they are ready for their intended use
  4. the methods to manufacture routine products
  5. the various processes you are expected to complete using power tools and equipment
  6. the personal protective equipment to use
  7. how to protect work against damage from general workplace activities, other occupations and adverse weather conditions.
  8. the work schedule and the timescales you are working to
  9. who to report problems or difficulties to in completing the work
  10. the importance of teamwork when working on film and TV sets
  11. how to identify and remove hazards in the working environment
  12. the health and safety legislation, statutory and organisational requirements
