Overview
This Standard is about rigging, fitting and operating wireless equipment, including the positioning and fitting of aerials and fitting equipment to contributors. It includes checking that equipment meets specification and is in working order, so that it operates effectively. It also includes working sensitively with contributors.
This Standard will apply to anybody who is involved with rigging, fitting and operating personal microphones or in-ear monitoring equipment.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- make sure the equipment specified is available at the required time and place
- confirm that equipment is complete, safe and in working order
- check the cleanliness and hygiene of personal equipment in line with hygiene requirements
- confirm that battery condition is adequate for anticipated periods of use
- check transmitters have appropriate audio input sensitivity, and that transmitter limiters operate in the correct way for transmitters' anticipated use
- position and connect aerials to optimise radio frequency pick up and minimise interference
- produce any required paperwork and labels in expected formats
- explain to appropriate people when specification cannot be met within operational constraints, and suggest suitable alternatives
- explain to contributors the arrangements necessary for fitting, drawing their attention to items which may screen or otherwise affect transmission
- fit equipment in a manner that respects contributors' sensitivities to body contact, and to the use of equipment and meets legal requirements when working with minors
- make sure equipment is safe, secure, neat, unobtrusive and comfortable for contributors
- position equipment in ways that optimise equipment performance, paying particular attention to microphone, cable and aerial placement
- remove or adjust personal items that may interfere with transmission to minimise their effect
- identify and remedy any defects and malfunctions in systems and equipment during performance with minimum disruption to performance
- confirm that provision complies with relevant radio frequency licensing requirements at all times
- dispose of waste material in line with waste disposal regulations and guidelines
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- how to obtain and interpret the specification and operational constraints for required personal microphones and in-ear monitoring equipment
- required equipment and components and their uses
- hygiene requirements, and how to check and maintain the cleanliness and hygiene of personal equipment items
- the characteristics of various transmission systems including radio frequency and induction, and how to optimise their operation for contributors
- how to assess the probability of co-channel interference
- sensitivities contributors may have to wearing radio equipment, and how to adapt the use of equipment to overcome them
- ways to explain technical issues to non-technical people to help them understand their significance
- how to treat contributors courteously, tactfully and sympathetically to minimise disruption to their concentration
- how to conceal equipment in hair or clothing and when it is appropriate to liaise with make-up and costume departments
- how fabrics interact with microphones
- how to communicate microphone and rigging needs to chaperones
- the criteria for judging the acceptability of fitted personal microphones and in-ear monitoring equipment
- expectations for paperwork and labels and why it is important that they are accurate and legible
- indicators of defects and malfunctions, how to recognise them and remedial action to take
- any relevant waste disposal regulations, particularly relating to safe disposal of batteries
- when it is appropriate to report defects and malfunctions to other people and how to do so
- how to assess the need for compliance and confirm that relevant radio frequency licensing laws are adhered to
