This standard is about selecting and monitoring other people creating radio and audio content. It includes directing the work of production teams and studio technicians as well as commissioning work from freelancers and independent producers.
It is also about offering a clear brief to those being tasked with content creation, collaborating with them and providing advice as necessary.
This standard is for those who select and direct others to create radio or audio content.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- select content creators who meet the required radio or audio content production specification
- provide briefings to the content creators regarding research findings and the agreed treatment for the content
- brief the content creators regarding any legal requirements and ethical considerations for the radio or audio production
- provide the content creators with information and advice for the content to be delivered within agreed deadlines
- make the necessary resources available
- facilitate creative risk-taking to improve the quality of the radio and audio content
- suggest alternatives where there is disagreement about the creative treatment or format of the content
- monitor progress and identify any need for intervention and support
- identify and agree revisions when research reveals new developments which affect the original ideas
- confirm any changes to approach or developments with production colleagues
- provide constructive feedback about work in progress as required
- clarify and resolve disagreements about the need for amendments or improvements to produce suitable radio or audio material within production deadlines
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the criteria for selecting people to create particular radio and audio content
- the contractual arrangements for freelancers or independent producers – including the issues of copyright and intellectual property rights
- what is required of content creators, taking into account the production parameters
- what information and advice to offer to content creators to ensure completion of the content in line with production requirements
- the methods of monitoring content development to ensure that it is meeting the brief
- how to ensure that the need for any improvements or intervention is identified promptly
- how to provide constructive feedback
- how to balance creative risk with time and budget constraints
- the legal or ethical issues related to the subject matter or treatment and how to take appropriate action to avoid problems with them
- how to action revisions and amendments
