This standard applies to all those who manage audio content using different applications, platforms and media.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- follow organisational procedures and processes to manage audio content
- import audio content using the specified method
- transfer audio content between audio workstations, platforms and different applications
- match interfaces between source and destination in audio level normalisation, loudness measurement, distortion, impedance, quality, polarity and format, and confirm that they have any required synchronism
- confirm that sound content is in the desired format, at the required level, and has the dynamic range appropriate for the recording medium or technology
- export audio files to appropriate media using the most appropriate method
- find alternative solutions for importing and exporting audio, where necessary
- save audio files in specified formats in a secure location, in line with organisational practice
- ensure that the integrity of audio content is maintained throughout its use
- complete recording within specified timescales
- remedy defects in sound, failures in systems, and mechanical breakdowns that are within your responsibility and area of expertise
- seek assistance when defects and breakdowns are beyond your own expertise
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the basic principles of sound and acoustics
- the key differences between analogue and digital audio content
- how to manage audio content correctly
- the various protocols and methods used to transfer audio content
- the various protocols and methods used for storing audio content on workstations and cloud based systems
- the main characteristics of microphones, accessories and applications
- the difference between mono and stereo audio and its implications
- the operating characteristics of portable recorders
- which file formats are uncompressed or compressed, the different forms of compression, and the implications of this in terms of copying and broadcast or delivery use
- the meaning of an audio file’s bit depth, sampling rate and bit rate, how they are connected and the implications for the file’s use
- how a file’s audio characteristics will affect its size when stored on an audio workstation or cloud based system
- which file formats are used for specific platforms and applications
