Overview
This standard is about your ability to trim and embellish items to meet the needs of a production.
Individuals will prepare materials and fixing requirements and apply embellishments in-line with the costume design concept and specification. This may involve sourcing materials, shaping, constructing, fixing and securing trimmings.
This standard may be applicable to costume supervisors, costume assistants, wardrobe assistants and costume makers.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- identify production requirements, costume designs and timescales
- source suitable materials for creating and attaching trimmings
- identify and prepare the item to be embellished and the required materials for creating and attaching trimmings/ embellishments
- select and set up the correct tools and equipment for the work to be carried out
- create and attach trimmings and embellishments to the item following COSH regulations when using hazardous substances i.e. adhesive, sprays, aerosols
- carry out shaping techniques taking account of the characteristics of the material being used
- identify problems, faulty materials, tools and equipment and take appropriate remedial action within the limits of your responsibility
- organise and keep the work area clean, tidy and safe
- confirm that completed work meets the requirements of the production
- carry out any required alterations
- follow the production confidentially rules
- communicate clearly with production staff and other relevant departments or individuals
- follow health, safety, COSH and environmental legislation and guidelines at all times
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the production, period, genre, look and timescales
- how to assess items and identify suitability for embellishment
- characteristics and handling techniques of different materials
- the importance of checking for material colour, texture, tolerances, and quality
- appropriate tools and equipment for the work to be carried out, and their location
- possible faults in materials, tools and equipment and potential solutions
- who to report issues and problems to
- shaping techniques for different materials and trimmings
- methods of creating trimmings from basic materials
- methods of matching trimmings to the item
- procedures for dealing with problems
- confidentially rules and procedures
- production staff and departments involved and the communication protocol
- statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
