Overview
This standard is about caring for props, including their use and maintenance during production, and storage when not in use. This standard also covers aspects of health and safety when handling and dealing with props.
Props can be either those that have been hired, or those that belong to the production company, or product placements, or all of these.
This standard may be suitable for all props roles.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- provide props as required by the shooting schedule
- handle props with care to maintain their condition
- check that props are in a safe condition for use to protect yourself and others from danger
- record and report any damaged or malfunctioning props
- check props which are not in use, confirm they are fit for purpose, and store them appropriately and safely
- check that working props will function throughout the production period
- carry out modifications and running repairs when required
- confirm the arrangements for modifications and repairs when these cannot be carried out on the set
- make arrangements for repair or replacement when required
- handle and store consumable props in line with hygiene regulations
- check and confirm the facilities for storing consumable props
- keep items in positions to enable safe retrieval and in line with production schedules
- store props when they are not in use
- keep records of the location and condition of props
- return props and other materials to suppliers, hirers, or storage in the agreed condition accompanied by the relevant documentation
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the importance and value of each prop to the production
- different types of props, their characteristics and uses
- how to check that all required props are available for the production
- procedures for protecting all props
- specific procedures for protecting higher value props
- safe handling and storage requirements for different types of props and materials
- how to avoid damaging props and other materials when checking them
- how to identify faulty props, what actions to take, who to inform and how to amend the documentation
- methods of repairing different types of props
- arrangements for dealing with props which cannot be repaired during the production session
- methods of preserving the condition of props and materials
- the cost implications of the loss of, or damage to, product placement items
- arrangements for returning props and other materials
- arrangements for storing, recycling, or disposing of props and other materials following the relevant health and safety legislation, regulations, and protocols
- the importance of keeping records of props usage
