Overview

​This standard is about wrapping, cataloguing, storing, photographing props and set items and liaising with departments on what needs to be kept for future productions or exhibitions.

This standard is also about considering what props and set items you can reuse and recycle.

This standard is suitable for those working as a Props asset manager, Props hand and a Props storeman*.

*This is a generic term and not gender specific.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. ​liaise with other departments including production asset management to determine which items are to be reused
  2. photograph and catalogue all items to be stored for future use in line with production requirements
  3. provide estimates of packing materials and containers required and their costs.
  4. source required packing materials and containers.
  5. assess transport and plant requirements such as forklift, telehandler, low loader truck and HGV
  6. implement special arrangements for packaging and protecting high value and fragile items
  7. check that items no longer needed are separated from those still required on the production
  8. check that items are handled and packed to facilitate safe and secure onwards transportation
  9. check and confirm that items which are no longer required are returned, stored appropriately, recycled, or disposed of safely
  10. pack items to meet future production requirements
  11. complete documentation as required
  12. check that items are stored to maintain their condition and security, and to provide ease of access for future use
  13. confirm that heavy or bulky items are handled according to the relevant health and safety legislation, regulations, and protocols

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. ​the timescales and deadlines required for wrapping a production and how to adapt plans as required
  2. how to check the information from other departments regarding the items to strike has been received
  3. how to identify which items will be needed in future and which will not
  4. the cataloguing system employed for archiving assets to be used in future productions if applicable
  5. the types of containers and packaging and their suitability for different types of props
  6. procedures for dealing with damaged and missing props, theft, and malicious damage
  7. the cost implications of the loss of, or damage to, product placement and hired items
  8. the permissions and transportation requirements for different types of props such as carnets
  9. how to handle items safely
  10. the requirements of the relevant health and safety legislation, regulations, and protocols
  11. which props and materials can be recycled or disposed of, and the relevant methods
  12. the documentation requirements for wrapping a set
