Overview
This standard is about preparing drawings and other visual information such as plans. It is about identifying what is required in terms of drawings and other visual information.
You must select the appropriate methods, media, and relevant scale to produce drawings. It requires you making best use of drawing techniques which are appropriate for the style adopted for the production. Your drawings should be complete, accurate and comply with industry technical conventions. The standard covers knowing when you need to bring in specialist skills.
This standard is for those working as a Production designer, an Art director, or a Draught person.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- interpret the brief to identify the requirements for drawings and other visual information
- assess and select methods, media, and the relevant scale for producing drawings
- use drawing techniques to meet the production style that conveys artistic and technical requirements for others
- check and confirm that the drawings and associated material are complete and comply with design requirements and technical information
- check and confirm that drawings contain information for the intended use and are completed within agreed timelines
- check and confirm that drawings show the visual effect at key stages intended by the decision makers for the production
- consult with experts and ensure the relevant technical information is clearly expressed in the drawings and other material
- complete and store records
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- how to interpret what is required to prepare drawings and associated material such as graphics and specifications
- who to consult and work with to ensure that drawings meet design requirements and technical information
- visual conventions, methods, and media to produce drawings and associated graphical information, including design drawings storyboards, camera projections and false (forced) perspectives
- the use of light, colour, and shape to convey structural information and mood
- who to consult and work with to ensure that drawings meet design information whilst remaining within production limits
- ways to develop your drawing skills
- the different types of method and medium for producing and storing drawings and associated information
- the importance of carrying out checks relating to content and presentation of drawings, associated graphical information and specifications
- how to maintain record systems of drawings and associated information
