Overview

​This standard is about using equipment to modify and manipulate light as specified by the person responsible for the lighting. The standard details how to attach filters to windows and filter frames, set and position flag or frame stands, and assemble frames and textiles. This standard also covers how to follow instructions to match the lighting effects required.

This standard is for those working as Gaffers.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. set up and adjust lighting equipment to the requirements and instructions of the person responsible for the lighting
  2. ensure all setups conform to current health and safety regulations and guidelines
  3. conduct dynamic risk assessment on all electrical equipment and operations while on site
  4. fine tune the lighting effects prior to the shoot until all the relevant parties are satisfied with the effects created
  5. select filters, scrims, RGB or colour wheels in accordance with lighting requirements
  6. check and record what filter and correction filter are installed
  7. attach the required filters and filter frames and other accessories
  8. determine where and when heat resistant filters should be used, and where they would be most effective
  9. set and position flags to achieve the desired effect
  10. assemble and use large frames and their stands, reflectors or diffusers
  11. identify and resolve faults and problems with lighting equipment
  12. replace inoperative equipment with minimal disruption to the production following current health and safety regulations affecting the production

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how lighting effects equipment should be set up and used following health and safety regulations and industry best practice
  2. the importance of dynamic risk assessment
  3. how to carry out dynamic risk assessment
  4. the types of lighting effects available, when to use them, and the methods of achieving them
  5. the range of available filters, scrims, RGB and colour wheels and their different effects such as diffusion, correction, colour and temperature control
  6. the characteristics of fire-retardant filters, relevant regulations in use for these and how these affect their use
  7. how to identify faults or problems with lighting equipment, and how to resolve them
  8. how to produce hard shadows and soft shadows using flags
  9. how to secure and position frames under different conditions with due regard to the safety of yourself and others
  10. safe methods of fixing or supporting stands, and who to contact for assistance
  11. what to do in the event of equipment failure
  12. the importance of minimal disruption to the production when replacing faulty equipment
