Rig car mounts in or on vehicles

This Standard involves mounting an internal or external camera mount on, or in, vehicles. It is about selecting the right type of camera mount and fixing the mount without damaging the vehicle.

It involves using ropes, strops and other fixings, and assessing the strength and suitability of these materials. It is about identifying all hazards and environmental circumstances which may affect the operation, producing a risk assessment, and keeping the production team informed of any special requirements.

This Standard is for anyone who rigs car mounts.

1. check the weight of cameras and accessories does not exceed the maximum weight load of mountings
2. use reliable information to confirm required positions and angles of shots
3. check that surfaces on which equipment is to be mounted is strong enough to support it
4. confirm with relevant people the routes, speeds, positions and direction of the vehicle being mounted and any other vehicles
5. travel the intended route at an appropriate time to identify the nature of the surface and any obstructions
6. produce a risk assessment in line with health and safety requirements
7. assemble and position rigs and make fast cameras and accessories in line with production requirements
8. use appropriate materials, ropes, knots, strops, wires and ratchet straps according to their specifications to prevent unwanted movement
9. specify pulleys and ropes that are within safe working loads (SWL)
10. confirm that rigs do not obstruct drivers' view or ability to control the vehicle
11. rig vehicles so that they comply with any relevant vehicle or road traffic regulations
12. advise relevant production staff when special permissions are required
13. inform the appropriate production staff of any hindrance or circumstances that affect the safe operation of rigs
14. check that the rig is safe in line with current regulations and guidance
15. secure and protect equipment when not in use in line with manufacturers' instructions
