Rig remote heads and systems

This Standard involves the specialist installation of a remotely controlled head.  This could be on a crane or any other mounting for which the grip is responsible, where the full specification of the crane may not be known to the remote head supplier. It is about achieving this safely and within the parameters of the mounting to be used.

This Standard is for anyone who rigs remote heads and systems.

1. carry out risk assessments in accordance with health and safety requirements for high risk locations
2. check that the weights of heads plus the other weights to be loaded on mounts do not exceed manufacturers' specifications
3. use specified interfaces and securing devices
4. make sure that any special earth bonds are secure and that all cables allow full movement of heads in all axis being used
5. check that cables cannot foul mounts or anything that is not part of mounts
6. provide required environmental protection within mounts' specifications
7. agree methods of communication between all crew involved in rigs' operation that are reliable
8. secure and protect equipment when not in use in line with manufacturers' instructions

3. how to obtain information on the weights of remote heads, their payload, and any cables, and their relevance to rigs and what they are to be mounted on

7. the limits of your expertise and when it is appropriate to call on other specialists

10. the safety procedures and communications are in place between the grip and the camera crew, and their importance
11. procedures to adopt when working at height, including guarding, toeboards, kickboards and handrails
12. how to secure equipment when not in use
