Lay complex track

This Standard involves the laying of track for camera dollies or cranes. It is about assessing the suitability of the surface on which the track will be used, and the type of track relative to incline and level and the sizes and weights of the equipment to be carried.

It involves assessing any special bracing required by inclines, and the safety implications of personnel riding on any equipment using the track.

This Standard is for anyone involved with laying complex track for dollies or cranes.

1. check the surface will give sufficient support for the entire length of the tracks
2. use reliable information to identify items above and to the side of tracks that could cause obstruction or danger
3. use reliable information to assess the probability and nature of any circumstances that might affect surface stability
4. specify floor-type, frames and boards that will support the weight of tracks
5. lay track that is level and silent
6. provide additional support which gives sufficient strength over gaps or overhangs, calling in a specialist rigger when appropriate
7. use track types recommended by suppliers
8. ensure tracks are secure and safe on steep inclines, and that dollies are able to track
9. provide vertical lifts using appropriate equipment
10. assess and fix safety stops or braking devices which prevent over speed or runoff
11. lay tracks in ways that prevent accidental tripping by any person
12. make sure tracks are safe from damage by falling objects or moving vehicles
13. ensure that any risk assessments are noted, and their requirements conformed to, by all personnel
14. monitor and maintain tracks for the duration of set-up/shots
15. move and lay track in line with manual handling procedures
