Lay complex track
URN: SKSG5
Business Sectors (Suites): Grips and Crane Technicians
Developed by: ScreenSkills
Approved on:

Overview
This Standard involves the laying of track for camera dollies or cranes. It is about assessing the suitability of the surface on which the track will be used, and the type of track relative to incline and level and the sizes and weights of the equipment to be carried.
It involves assessing any special bracing required by inclines, and the safety implications of personnel riding on any equipment using the track.
This Standard is for anyone involved with laying complex track for dollies or cranes.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- check the surface will give sufficient support for the entire length of the tracks
- use reliable information to identify items above and to the side of tracks that could cause obstruction or danger
- use reliable information to assess the probability and nature of any circumstances that might affect surface stability
- specify floor-type, frames and boards that will support the weight of tracks
- lay track that is level and silent
- provide additional support which gives sufficient strength over gaps or overhangs, calling in a specialist rigger when appropriate
- use track types recommended by suppliers
- ensure tracks are secure and safe on steep inclines, and that dollies are able to track
- provide vertical lifts using appropriate equipment
- assess and fix safety stops or braking devices which prevent over speed or runoff
- lay tracks in ways that prevent accidental tripping by any person
- make sure tracks are safe from damage by falling objects or moving vehicles
- ensure that any risk assessments are noted, and their requirements conformed to, by all personnel
- monitor and maintain tracks for the duration of set-up/shots
- move and lay track in line with manual handling procedures
- secure and protect equipment when not in use in line with manufacturers' instructions
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- relevant legislation, guidance and industry best practice
- how to produce risk assessments for self and others
- the direction and angle of shots and the path of any action
- where to obtain information about track location and length required
- the time available for construction
- the limits of your expertise and when it is appropriate to call on other specialists
- the benefits of teamwork and how to communicate with others
- how to assess the stability of surfaces
- what circumstances may affect the surface stability
- how to protect delicate surfaces from damage
- construction methods for relevant floor types, frames and boards
- how to access specialist riggers to provide a sufficiently strong surface over gaps or overhangs and when it is appropriate to use them
- how to construct and maintain level, silent tracks, regardless of surface
- types of track appropriate for different dollies or cranes
- how to rig and fix tracks, pulleys and strops, tie knots and use ratchet straps and wires to prevent slippage on inclines
- how to use tracks, pulleys, strops, knots, ratchet straps and wires to rig vertical lifts
- how to provide braking or harnesses to prevent overrun
- how to prevent danger to others from tripping
- how to prevent damage to the track from others
- how to monitor and maintain tracks for the duration of set-up/shot
- relevant manual handling procedures including required of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- how to secure equipment when not in use
- why it is important to keep equipment dry and free of dust, sand and other debris
