Overview
This Standard involves moving cameras along a track or other suitable surface. It requires a thorough understanding of, and an active response to, the hazards accompanying the handling, moving and fixing of heavy equipment.
It is about communicating clearly and precisely with the relevant crew member in order to achieve artistic solutions which meet the production's needs.
This Standard is for anyone who tracks cameras.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- move cameras in a smooth motion and follow operator's requirements on each occasion
- time movements to suit production requirements
- identify moves which are outside the capabilities of equipment or restricted by the people available
- report limitations to camera operators and seek solutions which meet production needs
- give clear notification of intended routes to all relevant people
- check that routes are free from non-essential people, cables and other obstructions
- communicate with other people in ways that enhance the quality and effectiveness of moves
- move cameras in line with manual handling procedures
- secure and protect equipment when not in use in line with manufacturers' instructions
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- relevant legislation, guidance and industry best practice
- principles of operating tracking equipment
- safety considerations of tracking equipment
- where to obtain information on intended routes and production needs
- any other intended movements
- the positional limitations of equipment
- when and how to carry out manual handling risk assessments
- manual handling procedures including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required
- the benefits of teamwork and how to communicate with others
- how to secure equipment when not in use
- why it is important to keep equipment dry and free of dust, sand and other debris
