This Standard is about reviewing the technical quality of video and audio outputs and referring compliance information back to relevant people.  This is a technical check rather than part of the creative process. It includes identifying and negotiating potential fixes and signing off end products once compliance is reached.  It can apply to the master and all versions or derivatives.

This Standard could apply to anyone involved with checking compliance with technical standards during or after post production.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. evaluate the feasibility and cost of what clients expect or need against reliable information
  2. evaluate video and audio quality against media delivery specifications identified in the workflow
  3. develop clear documentation which identifies potential fixes
  4. refer compliance information back to relevant people using accepted communication channels
  5. give clear advice on budget implications and limits
  6. reach agreement with relevant people about what can be changed, the quality expected and available budget and timescales
  7. find compromises that are acceptable to clients when elements are hard to remedy, or remedy cannot be funded 
  8. propose changes that can make the whole project more technically or commercially viable
  9. sign off final product using appropriate documentation once compliance is reached

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the technical expectations and requirements of the workflow
  2. current viewing standards, technical broadcast standards and current professional, national and international deliverable standards and expressions of best practice for different platforms
  3. processes of quality assessment for video and audio to expected technical standards
  4. the software available to identify technical issues and its limitations
  5. file specifications and naming conventions for the project
  6. how to identify problems with grading, colour, dead pixels, audio drop-out, tape damage, sound and their causes
  7. how to evaluate whether to refer compliance information to producers or those involved in post production
  8. how to identify technical problems that will be hard or expensive to deal with
  9. the commercial implications of who is going to pay for rectification
  10. how to communicate clearly and reach agreement with clients and other members of your team
  11. how viewers take in visual and audio information
  12. problems that can be caused by repeated transcoding and formats to use to avoid them
  13. principles of the management of metadata and its importance
  14. principles of standard deliverables and what to consider when working with non-standard deliverables
  15. principles of file formats, digital interconnectivity and elements of audio and video signals
  16. the contributions that can be made to technical quality by post production
  17. the documentation that needs to be used to identify fixes and sign off final product
