Overview

This standard is about identifying appropriate camera equipment to meet production needs.  This could apply to any type of production including feature films, TV dramas, commercials, documentaries, sports coverage, outside broadcast and live or stage events. 

It includes identifying camera equipment that meets production and shoot requirements, discussing options, considering health and safety implications and back up requirements and challenging equipment selection when it is not appropriate.

This standard is for anyone who identifies appropriate camera equipment whether it is for their own use or for use by others.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. identify camera equipment which suits the type of location, power supply and expected use
  2. discuss options for camera equipment with appropriate people
  3. identify equipment which allows for production flexibility and any necessary back up requirements
  4. identify camera equipment that meets safety guidelines related to its envisaged use
  5. identify camera equipment which will meet production requirements and deliver technical and artistic requirements of specified shoots
  6. specify camera equipment to appropriate people when required
  7. identify the limitations of chosen equipment when production requirements change
  8. challenge the selection of equipment that is not appropriate to production needs with appropriate people
  9. record details of selected equipment in line with production requirements

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. currently used models of camera, accessories and grip equipment and major obsolescent models and its features, uses, benefits, limitations and costs including weight and manouverability
  2. software for framerate and the impact of framerate on camera memory
  3. the advantages and disadvantages of the various shooting format options in relation to the requirements of the production
  4. how to check equipment is compliant with channels
  5. the relevant health and safety implications when determining resources
  6. how to present assessments and recommendations clearly
  7. production styles and methods, artistic or technical requirements and whether any special effects processes are envisaged, including laboratory effects or post production video effects
  8. how to contribute to script breakdown and schedules
  9. how to assess the choice of equipment with any resultant implications with respect to the shooting environment
  10. production requirements including budget and schedule and how to work within them
  11. equipment suppliers and facilities houses  
  12. how to draw up an inventory of selected equipment
