Overview

​This standard is about supervising, instructing and training personnel in the use of armoury and weapons for productions.

It will involve identifying key Heads of Department with whom you will need to liaise, regarding the use of identified armoury and weapons and complying with legislation and protocols.

You will be expected to advise and instruct cast and crew on how to look competent in using armoury and weapons whilst working with the characteristics of the script and complying with legislation and protocols.

This standard is for Armoury supervisors and on-set armourers.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. ​communicate the safety guidance to cast and crew
  2. supply pictorial and video test reference evidence to the production as required
  3. communicate scene choreography to the relevant personnel
  4. instruct cast members how the weapon effect will be achieved, demonstrating elements where appropriate
  5. check that the armoury, weapons, ammunition, and propellants are fit for purpose and in appropriate and compliant condition for use in productions
  6. respond to any budget or schedule changes and communicate these to all necessary personnel
  7. liaise with production to ensure effective, convenient, and secure weapon storage
  8. instruct artists in weapon safety procedures
  9. check and monitor that the handling of the weapons is correct and in line with the script
  10. take all aspects of risk assessment and management into account and provide documentation to this effect

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. ​how to liaise with appropriate Heads of Department, cast and crew, insurers and enforcing authorities
  2. how to ensure that the safety of cast and crew is always upheld, both in the workshop and on set
  3. how to assist in the scene's choreography and continuity according to the script breakdown and production requirements
  4. how to facilitate the successful and safe delivery of weapon effects, including testing and recording the results on camera
  5. how to liaise with production to ensure appropriate weapon storage at the location
  6. how to obtain the necessary permissions and approvals from relevant authorities and organisations
  7. the process of preparing armoury, weapons, ammunition, and propellants so that they can be used to create the weapon effect
  8. how to relate the weapon usage to the action in the scene
  9. the legislation and protocols relating to the safe and correct handling of armoury and weapons, ammunition, and propellants
