Overview

​This standard is about working with armoury and weapons in a workshop environment complying with legislation and protocols.

It will involve creating or upholding a safe, secure workshop space and maintaining the health and safety of yourself and the crew you work with at all times.

It also involves ensuring that the space is clean, organised and well managed in order to execute your work. This management could also include setting up a dry hire space to be able to deliver the necessary work in an effective manner, including cleaning up and returning the area to previous state.

As part of this work, you will be expected to liaise with local firearms officer to approve a certified and secure storage for weapons and ammunition.

This standard refers to working in both permanent and temporary workshop spaces, ensuring that there is sufficient space to carry out the required work effectively. 

This standard is for Armourers and Armoury supervisors.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. ​organise the workshop space by ensuring equipment and materials are stored in the appropriate locations when not in use
  2. identify the production personnel to liaise with regarding risk assessment
  3. provide documentation, as and when required, detailing any pertinent information about the workshop space
  4. check and confirm that all utilities and appliances are fitted and used complying with legislation and protocols
  5. ensure that the workshop space is secure at all times
  6. monitor all safety parameters in the workshop and provide documentation to this effect, as and when required
  7. liaise with production to confirm that the appropriate levels of insurance are in place and provide documentation to this effect
  8. keep maintenance records and ensure that test certificates can be provided
  9. provide waste disposal and recycling systems complying with legislation and protocols
  10. take all aspects of risk assessment and management into account and provide documentation to this effect

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. ​the equipment you have and use in the work area
  2. how to maintain clean and efficient upkeep of the workshop space
  3. the location of utility supplies and their suitability
  4. how to load and unload heavy equipment
  5. how to liaise with production regarding risk assessments and the impact these will have on the workshop space
  6. the health and safety measures for working in a workshop environment and the legislation to comply with
  7. the electrical set up of the building and the impact that will have on the work carried out there
  8. the air extraction equipment in place in the workshop
  9. how to ensure the safe, secure storage of materials and weapons in the workshop
  10. the security set up and processes for operating within the workshop and building
  11. how to create safety parameters within the workshop space, including, but not limited to, trip hazards and barrier tape
  12. how to identify and store dangerous and hazardous substances
  13. how to manage waste disposal and recycling in line legislation and protocols
  14. the insurance and licencing requirements for temporary and permanent workshop spaces and how to clarify what is covered within the production or company policy
  15. the importance of record keeping for equipment maintenance and risk assessment
