Overview

​This standard describes the competence that practitioners working within the community require to facilitate and deliver community-based sport and physical activity programmes. You will use methods and strategies to create a positive environment, engage and empower participants, ensure the programme is person-centred and specific to the community needs, goals and objectives. You will need to apply a range of theories and approaches as well as be adaptable to ensure the appropriateness and effectiveness of the programme.

This standard is for all practitioners working within the community.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. build rapport with the participants and establish your role
  2. interact with the participants, colleagues, and volunteers according to the requirement of the programme and the organisational regulations and procedures
  3. create a positive and empowering physical, social, and emotional environment for the participants
  4. motivate colleagues and volunteers to fulfil their roles with commitment and enthusiasm, using methods appropriate to their needs, abilities, and preference
  5. use a range of approaches to bring about positive change in attitudes and behaviours
  6. adapt own practice and apply a person-centred approach to meet the needs of the participants
  7. make sure that effective, adaptable, and flexible safety parameters have been established following health and safety requirements
  8. individualise and differentiate delivery to ensure provision is inclusive, meets participants needs, goals, objectives and is accessible
  9. instruct, teach, coach and mentor participants using relevant approaches and strategies, to achieve the desired outcomes
  10. use technological advancements and products to support your delivery
  11. communicate with the participants and others at a pace, in a manner and at a level appropriate to their understanding, preferences and needs
  12. manage disruptive behaviour of participants
  13. use a range of approaches to enable the participant to give feedback to support future provision
  14. operate within your scope of practice and in accordance with the guidelines
  15. follow current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to establish your role with the participants, colleagues and volunteers using a range of techniques and methods of communication
  2. how to create and maintain a positive, professional and trusting relationship with participants
  3. the importance of empowering the participants to take a level of autonomy and independence in their programme delivery
  4. the benefits of using colleagues and volunteers to support the delivery
  5. motivational principles, methods, tools and techniques
  6. theories of behaviour change
  7. the different approaches including person-centred, pedagogy/andragogy and their application to adapting own practice to meet the needs of participants
  8. the importance of effective, adaptable, and flexible safety parameters following health and safety requirements 
  9. methods of differentiating in order to respond to participants different learning and communication preferences
  10. how to make the provision inclusive and accessible to specific target groups
  11. a broad range of suitable communication tools, strategies and techniques that will support the participants to meet their needs
  12. the importance of motivational climate and the impact this has on participants
  13. relevant theories of human and social development, physical literacy and models of psychology involved in facilitating and delivering programmes
  14. a range of technological advancements and products that can support the delivery of programmes
  15. the socioeconomic, geographical, environmental and legal considerations in relation to the implementation of technologies
  16. what and how to apply emotional and cultural intelligence to effectively engage with participants
  17. relevant research and theories on judgement and decision making
  18. how to effectively manage disruptive behaviour
  19. the broad range of appropriate approaches to enable the participants to give feedback to help them learn from their experience
  20. the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities, and accountability as it applies to your job role
  21. current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere
