Overview


This standard describes the competence that practitioners working within the community require to design community-based sport and physical activity programmes. You will meet and agree with community groups their needs from the programme while also involving colleagues and volunteers. Using insight, you will design engaging and innovative sport and physical activity programme to bring community groups together and benefit from being active. 

This standard is for all practitioners working within the community. 


Performance criteria

You must be able to:



1. communicate with the community, colleagues and volunteers at a pace, in a manner and at level appropriate to their understanding, preference and needs
2. develop a positive motivational climate to support the psychological needs and empower the community in decision making
3. use insight to support the development of engaging and innovative sport and physical activity programmes
4. identify and challenge assumptions where necessary
5. identify and promote the potential benefit sport and physical activity has on community groups and individuals
6. ensure the community, colleagues and volunteers have an accurate understanding of the programme goals and how they relate to the overall outcomes
7. work with the communities, colleagues and volunteers to identify the programme needs, goals and objectives
8. identify potential barriers to participation and implement appropriate strategies to mitigate the risks of dropout
9. design engaging and innovative programmes that apply appropriate activities and techniques supported by suitable research and theories specific to the needs, goals and objectives of the community group
10. source relevant funding streams to support community programmes
11. identify resources required to achieve their programme needs, goals and objectives 
12. facilitate community groups to think innovatively about their available resources and assets
13. outline a clear monitoring and evaluation system to evaluate the project/programmes
14. operate within your scope of practice and in accordance with the guidelines
15. follow current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:


1. a broad range of suitable communication tools, strategies, and techniques appropriate to communities, colleagues and volunteers understanding, preference and needs
2. the importance of empowering the community to take a level of autonomy and independence in their needs, goals and objectives
3. relevant theories that support motivational climate
4. the importance of motivational climate and the impact this has on community groups
5. the application of relevant theories of human and social development, in planning and designing innovative programmes
6. the types and importance of insight during the development stage
7. how to use insight to develop suitable programmes to attract target groups
8. theories of behaviour change 
9. the importance of exploring and challenging assumption to bring about effective behaviour change
10. the importance and benefits of sport and physical activity on individuals and communities
11. the importance of collaborating with the community, colleagues and volunteers in the programme requirements 
12. barriers and motivators for a range of community groups
13. the principles of programme design
14. how to design engaging and innovative programmes that are inclusive across all communities
15. a broad range of approaches to meet individual and community needs, goals and objectives
16. available funding streams to support community programmes
17. how to consider resource requirements and available assets 
18. clear monitoring and evaluation systems 
19. the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities, and accountability as it applies to your job role
20. current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere
