Overview
This standard describes the competence that practitioners working within the community require to develop a strategy for providing community-based sport and physical activity programmes. You will collaborate with community groups to understand their needs, goals and objectives and promote the benefits of sport and physical activity to support these.

Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- work with individuals and groups to assess the changing political, social, and economic environment affecting their community
- research and analyse relevant national, local agendas and funding opportunities
- create a culture of trust and mutual respect between communities
- promote ways of working that are inclusive across diverse and marginalised communities
- support communities to clearly identify and agree aims, outcomes and strategy requirements for their community needs based on your research
- communicate the benefits of collaborative working which challenge assumptions and stereotypes
- promote the benefits of sport and physical activity and how this links to community needs
- support communities to assess the potential benefits and risks of engaging in collaborative work
- promote ways of involving hard to reach communities
- raise awareness of barriers to participation for community groups
- support community groups to overcome barriers to achieving their needs, goals and objectives
- build on the strengths, skills, and expertise of individuals within the community to support aims, outcomes, and strategies
- evaluate existing resources to meet expressed community priorities
- consolidate relevant information and develop a strategy for providing innovative and effective sport and physical activity
- monitor and evaluate collaborative working to improve future practice
- operate within your scope of practice and in accordance with the guidelines
- follow current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere

- political, social, and economic environments and their impact on communities
- funding landscape and the opportunities available
- how to engage with all sections of communities including those diverse and hard to reach
- how to create and maintain a positive, professional, and trusting relationship with participants
- the diversity of groups and communities
- the benefits of recognising and valuing diversity
- how injustice, discrimination, and social exclusion impact on the lives of individuals and communities
- the importance of the community groups deciding on their own needs, goals and objectives
- a broad range of suitable communication tools, strategies, and techniques
- risks and benefits of working collaboratively
- how to work inclusively across all communities
- barriers to involvement and approaches and techniques for overcoming them
- individuals’ strengths, skills, and expertise and how these can support project aims, outcomes, strategies
- how to leverage existing assets and resources to meet project aims, outcomes and strategies
- how to develop a strategy based on gathered information to ensure an innovative and effective sports and physical activity programme is available
- how to monitor and evaluate collaborative working to improve future practice
- the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibility, and accountability as it applies to your job role
