Overview

​This standard is about physical fitness and its importance to achieving excellence in your sport. To be successful, elite athletes need to develop and maintain high levels of physical fitness. You will be working with experienced and proficient coaching staff and/or other staff such as personal trainers, physiotherapists and doctors. However, you also have an important role to play in improving your own physical capabilities.

The main outcomes of this standard are:

  1. Select and agree a development programme to improve your physical capability 

  2. Implement a development programme to improve your physical capability 

  3. Apply and evaluate your physical capability

This standard is for athletes who have the realistic potential to achieve excellence in their sport and are seeking to perform at the highest level.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

Select and agree a development programme to improve your physical capability

  1.  work with your coaching and/or other staff to:

1.1 agree the physical demands for excellence in your role(s) 

1.2 analyse your level of physical capability and your potential for achieving excellence

1.3 select goals that meet your physical priorities 

1.4 plan and agree a development programme to meet your physical priorities

  1.  agree with your coaching and/or other staff your main priorities for achieving the necessary level of physical capability

Implement a development programme to improve your physical capability

  1. participate in the planned physical conditioning development programme

4.  analyse your participation in the programme 

5.  contribute to ongoing assessments of your progress

6.  provide feedback to your coaching and/or other staff on how well your physical conditioning development programme is meeting your needs

7.  make modifications to your physical conditioning development programme to help you achieve your physical goals

Apply and evaluate your physical capability

  1. discuss and agree with your coaching and/or other staff how you can work on your physical capability before, during and after competition

  2. use your physical capability to take part in pre-competition practices

  3. provide feedback to your coaching and/or other staff on the effectiveness of pre-competition physical practices and make suggestions for improvement

  4. integrate your physical capability with your technical, tactical and psychological skills at all times, particularly in a competitive situation

  5.  work with your coaching staff and/or other staff to evaluate and improve your performance and set new physical goals


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

Select and agree a development programme to improve your physical capability

  1. sources of information about the physical demands of your sport and how to maximise their use

  2. the physical demands of your role(s) in your sport

  3. effective ways of working with your coaching and/or other staff on improving your physical capability

  4. the types of assessments that are used to analyse physical capability in your sport, how to take part in them and how they work

  5. the importance of providing your own views and opinions during assessments of your physical capability

  6. the types of physical priorities that athletes in your role may have to concentrate on to achieve excellence

Implement a development programme to improve your physical capability

  1. why you must set, understand and agree physical goals to achieve excellence in your sport

  2. the types of physical goals that athletes at your level may need to set themselves

  3. the main components of a physical conditioning development programme at your level in your sport and how they can help with achieving your goals

  4. the common types of injuries in your sport and the short, medium and long term effects these can have on your performance

  5. different strategies for reducing the risk of injury

  6. the psychological impact that injuries can have on your performance

  7. the physical and psychological strategies you can use to recover from injuries

  8. the main components of a development programme to recover from injury both physically and psychologically

  9. the types of information that you can provide to coaching and/or other staff to help them develop your physical conditioning development programme appropriate to your needs

  10. the importance of adhering to your physical conditioning development programme and how to do so

  11. why recovery is important in your physical conditioning development programme

  12. the importance of your contribution to all aspects of the physical conditioning development programme
