Overview

This standard describes the competence that sports coaches working within an educational setting require to organise and lead sport and physical activity events, competitions and enrichment programmes. You will organise and lead the event based on curriculum programmes and individual needs and take inspiration from National and major sporting events. The event must be inclusive and accessible and inspire the individuals to engage.
 
This standard is for all sports coaches that have responsibility for a range of individuals in an educational setting.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. identify the needs and opportunities for sport and physical activity events, competitions and enrichment programmes
  2. present proposals that outline the structure of sport and physical activity events, competitions and enrichment programme and the impact these will have on the individuals
  3. work collaboratively with external parties, colleagues, and volunteers to plan and organise the event, competition or programme
  4. identify potential barriers to participation and implement appropriate strategies to mitigate the chance of dropout
  5. identify required resources, equipment and venues considering available local assets
  6. ensure the event is inclusive and accessible and provides an inspirational experience for individuals
  7. engage in appropriate promotional activity to encourage participation
  8. make sure that effective, adaptable, and flexible safety parameters have been established following health and safety requirements
  9. contribute to the delivery of innovative and engaging sport and physical activity events, competitions and enrichment programmes
  10. outline a clear monitoring ad evaluation system to evaluate the programmes
  11. evaluate the success of the event using appropriate analysis techniques
  12. operate within your scope of practice and in accordance with the guidelines
  13. follow current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. a range of needs and opportunities for sport and physical activity events, competitions and enrichment programmes
  2. how and where to gather information from to identify opportunities
  3. what the benefits of these events, competitions and programmes can have on individuals and the educational setting
  4. local, National and major events and how these can inspire individuals
  5. how to organise and co-ordinate event, competitions and programmes to meet the objectives
  6. how to work collaboratively with external partners, colleagues, and volunteers
  7. a broad range of suitable communication tools, strategies, and techniques appropriate engage external partners, colleagues, and volunteers
  8. barriers and motivators for a range of individuals
  9. available funding streams to support events, competitions and enrichment programmes
  10. how to identify equipment, resources, and venue requirements
  11. how to make use of available local assets
  12. how to make the event inclusive and accessible
  13. positive and empowering learning environments and behaviour management strategies relevant to individuals needs
  14. the various forms of promotional activity that are appropriate to the audience
  15. the importance of effective, adaptable, and flexible safety parameters following health and safety requirements
  16. how to deliver engaging and innovative activities
  17. why it is important to evaluate the success of an event, competition and programme to inform future opportunities
  18. clear monitoring and evaluation systems
  19. the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities, and accountability as it applies to your job role
  20. the National trend, strategies and initiatives in sport and physical education
  21. current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere
