Overview
This standard is about developing outdoor programmes which meet participants needs.
This standard covers two outcomes:
- identify participants needs
- develop programmes which meet participants needs
This standard is for staff with some experience working in the outdoors who are capable of working without direct supervision. Typical contexts will be working with adults, children and young people in the following:
- recreational purposes
- adventurous experiences
- educational purposes
- organisation needs
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- gather information about the needs of the participants using organisational methods in advance of designing the programme.
- confirm and prioritise needs through consultation with participants and colleagues.
- establish levels of agreement for physical, psychological and or emotional risk taking
- identify and agree preferred learning and transfer strategies with colleagues and participants5. develop the programme so that it meets agreed participants’ needs
- design challenges that meet the participants’ needs
- plan for progression and the transfer of learning to other contexts based on the programme outcomes
- plan for possible contingencies
- agree the programme with other people to make sure it is consistent with participants needs, resources available, environment and other planned activities.
- plan opportunities for reflection, review and evaluation of the programme outcomes
- ensure the programme is consistent and in accordance with all relevant legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere
- the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role
- the importance of gathering information on the needs of the participants in advance of the programme
- how to analyse and confirm participants needs through consultation with colleagues
- how to establish levels of agreement for physical, psychological and or emotional risk taking
- how to identify and agree preferred learning and transfer strategies with participants and colleagues
- the underlying philosophy of outdoor programmes, and why its principles and values are important
- how to design challenges that meet the participants and client's needs, abilities, potential and learning styles
- how to select activities and environments that meet the needs, abilities, potential and learning styles
- factors to bear in mind when selecting activities which stretch the participants and how to select such activities
- how to plan for progression and the transfer of learning to other contexts based on the programme outcomes
- how to plan opportunities for reflection, review and evaluation of the programme outcomes
- how to plan for contingencies within the programme design
