Overview

This standard describes the competence required to develop and agree outdoor programmes with clients, colleagues and other key stakeholders. This is likely to follow the initial meeting to discuss programme needs and goals.

The unit is recommended for managers and senior practitioners in the outdoor sector, who have a responsibility to create suitable programmes to align with clients and participants needs and goals.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:


1. identify objectives which are consistent with the agreed programme goals

2. research and identify different activities and combinations/sequences of activities which are consistent with:
    2.1 needs, abilities and potential of the participants
    2.2 agreed levels of physical, psychological and emotional risk                  taking
    2.3 agreed learning style and learning transfer strategies
    2.4 opportunities for progression, reflection, review and evaluation
    2.5 evaluation and any need for follow-up
    2.6 operational constraints, available resources and expertise
    2.7 what you have learned from prior experience and reflection
    2.8 emerging trends and developments
    2.9 possible contingencies
3. consult and take account of relevant sources of information and expertise
4. develop possible programme options for the client which combine tried and tested protocols with innovative solutions
5. ensure all programme options are consistent with relevant legislation, guidelines and requirements
6. work with the client to select and refine programme options that are consistent with their needs
7. develop and record the full detail of the programme, providing an appropriate degree of flexibility
8. confirm the final programme with the client, making any amendments as necessary


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:


1. the current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere

2. the process of developing outdoor programmes
3. the importance of developing programme objectives and how to develop objectives from agreed goals
4. the importance of being able to conceptualise the learning process
5. how to develop activities and combinations/sequences of activities within an outdoor programme as appropriate to client goals, needs and other relevant requirements
6. how to develop activities that provide for challenge and progression within agreed levels of emotional and physical risk taking
7. the role and importance of reflection and review within outdoor programmes
8. the importance of evaluation and how to develop evaluation strategies
9. the importance of consulting with relevant colleagues and taking account of their views and experiences
10. the importance of developing different programme options for the client
11. how to build on past experience whilst developing solutions that are new and innovative
12. the importance of programmes having the appropriate degree of flexibility 
13. the values and principles of the three main areas of the outdoor sector, and how these should be put into practice when designing programmes and working with clients
14. the implications of relevant legislation, guidelines and requirements for the design of outdoor programmes and activities
15. the types of contingencies which are likely to occur and the plans that need to be put in place to address these contingencies 
16. the policies and procedures of your own organisation in relation to developing outdoor programmes
17. the extent of own responsibilities for developing and agreeing outdoor programmes with clients and colleagues
18. other stakeholders who might have an interest in outdoor programmes
19. how your role relates to the roles of others in your organisation in relation to developing outdoor programmes
