Overview
This standard covers helping to establish codes of practice for the way sites are used, ensuring these codes are understood and educating participants in the principles of environmental conservation.
This standard is for sports development staff and for experienced staff working in the outdoors who are capable of working without direct supervision.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- make contributions to the code of practice based on current practice and guidance
- monitor activities under your control conform to the code of practice and agreements
- evaluate the impact of activities on the sites which you use
- take opportunities to improve the natural environment in a way that is compatible with the site
- report on the impact of activities on these sites to the responsible colleague
- ensure the participants are aware of the current codes of practice and agreements for the site they will be using
- provide the participants with information on the impact which could be caused to the site
- ensure the participants are aware of how the impact to the site can be kept to a minimum
- draw the participants' attention to vulnerable areas of the site and show how these areas should be treated
- provide participants with transferable examples of practice and guidance on how to treat other sites in similar ways
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere
- the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role
- the importance of environmental protection and how codes of practice can contribute
- how to implement current codes of practice in use and how to contribute to their development within their area of responsibility
- the importance of ensuring that all staff are aware and conform to codes of practice and agreements
- how to monitor and evaluate the impact of activities on sites
- the ways in which the natural environment can be improved in a way compatible to the site
- the reporting procedures to be followed when implementing codes of practice
- the importance of participants understanding the codes of practice and agreements about the use of sites
- how to check and confirm participants' understanding of potential impact to the site and measures, which can be taken to minimise environmental impact
- vulnerable areas of the site and how to ensure that participants know about these
- the importance of providing a transferable model in terms of environmental practice and guidance, and how to do so
