Overview

This standard is about arranging and supervising travel for children, young people and adults. Travel may be 'self-powered', such as on foot or by bicycle, in an owned or hired vehicle, or by public transport.


This standard covers two outcomes. These are:

1. make travel arrangements

2. supervise travel

This standard is for people who arrange travel involving children and young people with adult involvement.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. plan travel arrangements that meet the requirements of the journey and needs of the participants

  2. plan travel arrangements that balance efficiency, cost-effectiveness, comfort and concern for the environment

  3. plan for contingencies within your travel arrangements

  4. plan travel arrangements that are safe and take account of the conditions during the journey

  5. provide the participants, colleagues and others with correct and up-to date information about the travel arrangements

  6. ensure that the participants, colleagues and others are fully prepared for the journey

  7. take action to ensure the timely departure and arrival of the participants, colleagues and others

  8. maintain the safety of the participants, colleagues and others during the journey

  9. ensure that equipment, belongings and any travel documents are safe and secure during the journey

  10. supervise the handling of equipment and belongings to avoid injury and damage

  11. deal with any difficulties during the journey in a way which maintains the safety, security, comfort of participants, colleagues and others

12. work safely at all times and in accordance with all relevant legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols

  1. keep required travel records in accordance with organisational requirements and procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere

  2. the scope and limitations of your own competence, responsibilities and accountability as it applies to your job role

  3. how to implement specific procedures and protocols for the health, safety and welfare of the participants

  4. how to plan travel arrangements that meet the requirement of the journey and needs of the participants

  5. additional resources and arrangements that may be necessary for individual's with learning and/or physical disabilities

  6. how to plan additional resources and arrangements that may be necessary to meet the needs of participants

  7. what kinds of contingencies might occur and what plans to make to take account of these

  8. how to plan travel arrangements that are safe and take account of the conditions during the journey

  9. the importance of providing participants, colleagues and others with up to-date and accurate information about travel arrangements

  10. how to provide the participants, colleagues and other people with correct and up-to-date information about the travel arrangements

  11. how to ensure that the participants, colleagues and other people are fully prepared for the journey

  12. what steps to take to ensure the safe and timely departure and arrival of participants

  13. the importance of ensuring the safety and welfare of participants during the journey and how to do so

  14. methods of encouraging positive behaviour and dealing with unacceptable behaviour

  15. how to ensure that equipment, belongings and any travel documents are safe and secure during the journey

  16. how to supervise the handling of equipment and belongings to avoid injury and damage

  17. how to ensure that vehicles under your control conform to current legislations, guidelines, policies and procedures

  18. the types of difficulties which might arise during the journey and how to deal with these in a way which maintains the safety, security, comfort of the participants

  19. which records need to be kept and the importance of doing so
