Prepare the working areas and assist senior staff
Overview
This standard coexists alongside, SKAHDBRBNST1 Implement and maintain safe, hygienic and effective working practices. This standard is about a hair professional supporting senior staff by preparing and maintaining their work areas. Duties include preparing and maintaining the working environment, materials, tools and equipment. You may be required to assist senior staff during the service. You will also be required to do a post procedure evaluation and reflection for continuous improvement. Users of this standard will need to ensure that their practices reflect up-to-date information, policies, procedures and best practice guidance.
The main outcomes are:
Prepare and maintain the working environment for hair services, including the materials, tools and equipment required
Sanitise and sterilise tools and equipment
Carry out laundry duties in accordance with legislative requirements
Replenish stock as and when required
Maintain the individual's comfort and care as part of your service
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
1. maintain your responsibilities for health and safety in accordance with legislation, regulations, directives and guidelines
2. discuss your role and responsibilities within the hair service, with senior staff, to include:
2.1 preparation details of equipment, tools, materials and products required in accordance with the hair service plan and manufacturer instructions
2.2 how you will assist during the hair service
2.3 the associated risks and how they can be avoided
Preparing for the service
3. prepare the working environment, tools and materials required to include:
3.1 select products in accordance with your level of competence, manufacturer instructions and organisational policies and procedures
4. check with the senior staff that preparation tasks have been fulfilled
Assisting within the service
5. prepare the individual in accordance with the hair service protocol
6. assist with the replenishment of products and materials as required
7. observe the techniques the senior staff use when carrying out the hair services, to include:
7.1 reflect on your knowledge and understanding and how each service differs depending on the individuals needs
8. support the individual's comfort and care through hospitality services
9. check with senior staff that assisting tasks within the service have been fulfilled
Concluding the service
10. conclude the service in accordance with the service plan
11. implement the correct course of action in the event of an adverse reaction
12. use reflective practice to evaluate the preparation and maintenance of the working environment and take appropriate action, to include:
12.1 receiving feedback from peers, individuals and senior staff
13. record the outcome of the evaluation for personal development

7. how to clean, disinfect and sterilise different tools used for the different hair services such as metals, plastic, wood, electrical
8. the risks associated with exposure to chemical based hair products
9. how to prepare the working environment for hair services
10. how to prepare the individual for hair services, to include
10.1 ways in which you can minimise exposure to chemical based products
11. how to ensure you are minimising damage to the individual's hair during the shampooing and conditioning process
12. the health and safety responsibilities in accordance with legislation before, during and post the hair service
13. why it is important to discuss and understand instructions and guidance given by senior staff, to include:
13.1 the consequences of not following instructions
14. the legislative, insurance and organisational requirements for taking and storing visual media of the individual's treatment area
15. the legislative and regulatory requirements of updating and storing the individual's service records
16. the purpose of reflective practice and evaluation and how it informs personal development and future services
17. the instructions and advice, post the hair service

If shampooing and/or conditioning treatment is required, the user of this standard must refer to SKAHDBR1 Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
