Overview

This standard is about Assistant Hairdressers and Barbers carrying out a range of basic drying and styling techniques, whilst under the supervision of a senior staff member. Responsibilities for health and safety in accordance with the job role, health and safety legislation/regulations, organisational policies and senior staff instructions must be maintained. Discussions with a senior member of staff will take place in support of development and areas for improvement with a senior member of staff will take place following the service.

1.    Discuss and agree your role and responsibilities when carrying out
drying and styling services, with a senior member of staff
2.    Maintain your responsibilities for health and safety in accordance
with health and safety legislation/regulations, organisational policy
and senior staff instructions
3.    Prepare and protect yourself ready to undertake a drying and
styling service
4.    Prepare the working area, tools and equipment, materials and
products for the drying and styling service
5.    Prepare the individual as instructed by as senior member of staff
6.    Observe a senior member of staff whilst they carry out a
consultation, taking into consideration hair classification,
characteristics and state of hair
7.    Discuss with a senior member of staff the techniques, products,
tools and equipment to be used to achieve the required finished
look
8.    Ensure there is an even level of moisture in the hair
9.    Apply the selected styling products following senior staff member
instructions
10. Comb, section and secure hair ensuring neat sections are used
throughout the service
11. Ensure the individual is comfortable throughout the drying and styling
service
12. Carry out appropriate blow-drying techniques to achieve the
required style following senior staff instructions
13. Work methodically and maintain the tension when using the tools to
achieve the required movement and shape, throughout the drying
and styling process
14. Apply finishing products to complete the style following senior staff
member instructions
15. Ensure the direction of the air flow and temperature of the hairdryer
minimises the risk of causing damage to the hair
16. Discuss your development and areas for improvement with a senior
member of staff

Supervising members of staff   -  a qualified member of staff whom is a Stylist, Barber, Manager, Mentor, Tutor/Educator, For Customer service tasks this may also be a Receptionist
Individual – client and may also include team members and visitors
Personal development –  self-improvement. Improves an individual’s capabilities and potential
Responsibilities - having a duty to deal with something eg working safely to avoid risk to others
Health and safety regulations – health and safety law which must be followed
Organisational policies - set of rules, responsibilities, processes and timelines and that behaviour which must be followed
Personal protective equipment (PPE)– items of clothing and equipment to protect individuals eg Gown, towels, Aprons, Gloves and other appropriate PPE

Tension – The amount of force used to hold hair while carrying out a range of services eg shampooing, drying, styling, cutting hair, colouring.
Contact dermatitisinflammation of the skin (redness, itchy, dry, cracked) when it comes into contact with a particular substance when carrying out a range of services eg Shampooing, Styling, chemical treatments
