Prepare working areas and assist in a range of services
Overview
This standard is about Assistant Hairdressers and Barbers supporting senior staff with a range of services. Whilst using this standard and in accordance with the job role, responsibilities for the relevant health and safety legislation/regulations, manufacturers and the supervising member of staff’s instructions, must be maintained. Duties include preparing and maintaining the working area, materials, tools, and equipment whilst under guidance of a supervising member of staff. Personal development and areas for improvement will be discussed with the supervising member of staff following completed tasks.

responsibilities when preparing the work areas and assisting
senior staff with a range of services
2. Maintain your responsibilities for health and safety in accordance
with legislation/regulations, organisational policies and as instructed
by a senior member of staff
3. Prepare and protect yourself ready to undertake preparation of work areas and assisting senior staff
4. Prepare the working area, tools, equipment, materials and products
for a range of services as instructed by the senior member staff
5. Prepare the individual in accordance with senior staff instructions.
6. Ask the individual if they are comfortable and offer them
refreshments in line with organisational policy and senior staff
instructions
7. Assist a senior member of staff during the service as required
8. Observe services carried out by senior staff for the purpose of your
personal development
9. Clean work surfaces following completion of services, leaving work
areas in a suitable condition in preparation for the next service
10. Clean and disinfect tools and equipment as instructed by senior staff
11. Carry out laundry duties in line with company policy
12. Dispose of waste materials
13. Replenish low levels of resources, when required, to minimise
disruption to your own work and to individuals
14. Check with senior staff that assisting tasks within the service have
been fulfilled
15. Discuss with a senior member of staff, how each service observed
differs depending on the individuals needs
16. Discuss your development and areas for improvement with a senior
member of staff

Supervising members of staff - a qualified member of staff whom is a Stylist, Barber, Manager, Mentor, Tutor/Educator, For Customer service tasks this may also be a Receptionist

Responsibilities - having a duty to deal with something eg working safely to avoid risk to others
Health and safety regulations – health and safety law which must be followed
Organisational policies - set of rules, responsibilities, processes and timelines and that behaviour which must be followed
Personal protective equipment (PPE)– items of clothing and equipment to protect individuals eg Gown, towels, Aprons, Gloves and other appropriate PPE

Tension – The amount of force used to hold hair while carrying out a range of services eg shampooing, drying, styling, cutting hair, colouring.
Contact dermatitis – inflammation of the skin (redness, itchy, dry, cracked) when it comes into contact with a particular substance when carrying out a range of services eg Shampooing, Styling, chemical treatments
