Overview
This standard is about optimum nutrition and its importance to achieving excellence in your sport. Nutrition affects health as well as physical performance so a sound knowledge of nutrition is important to your overall development.
Working with your coaching and/or other staff to develop a nutritional strategy that will integrate with all other aspects of your training programme. You will be working with experienced and proficient coaching staff and/or other staff such as personal trainers, nutritionists, physiotherapists and doctors. However, you also have an important role to play to optimise your performance 'cleanly' by adhering to the anti-doping rules and procedures.
The main outcomes of this standard are:

This standard is for athletes who have the realistic potential to achieve excellence in their sport and are seeking to perform at the highest level.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
Contribute to a nutritional strategy to improve your performance
1. provide coaching and/or other staff with information about your energy demands and specific nutritional needs
2. provide coaching and/or other staff with information about your lifestyle, likes and dislikes
3. agree a nutritional strategy that is appropriate to your role(s) in sport taking into consideration your lifestyle, likes, dislikes and supplementation with coaching and/or other staff

Implement and review the nutritional strategy to improve own performance
follow the agreed nutritional strategy, before, during and after training and competition
provide coaching and/or other staff with the information they need to monitor and evaluate your nutritional strategy
liaise with coaching and/or other staff to develop and improve your nutritional strategy
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:

the importance of nutrition to an athlete's performance
the main components of a nutritional strategy and how these can help you achieve optimum results in your sport
3 the energy demands and particular nutritional needs of your role(s) in your sport
the effects of lifestyle, likes and dislikes when developing a nutritional strategy
why you should ensure that other people providing you with meals understand and support your nutritional strategy
the importance of adhering to your nutritional strategy before, during and after competition and training
how and why to check medication is safe to take and does not contain any banned substances
the risks associated with the use of supplements from an anti-doping perspective

Implement and review the nutritional strategy to improve your performance
the anti-doping rule violations and the principle of strict liability
the importance of 'clean' sport, competing fairly and 'cleanly'
the categories of banned substances and why these are banned in sport
the procedures for drug testing, including your rights and responsibilities
the benefit of a balanced diet which fuels performance, against taking nutritional supplements
the types of information that your coaching and/or other staff may need to evaluate your nutritional strategy
the types of improvements that can be made to your nutritional strategy to meet your individual needs
