Performance criteria
You must be able to:
prepare the environment and self, ready to deliver the personal training session
identify and select safe and correct equipment and resources for the personal training session
meet the participants at the agreed times
collect any new information from clients about their response to previous personal training sessions and/or general well-being
inform clients how the session links to their goals
discuss the physical and technical demands of the planned exercises with clients
negotiate, agree and record with clients any changes to the planned exercises to meet their goals and preferences
demonstrate and instruct the client to perform exercises with correct techniques
communicate with clients in a manner and style appropriate to their preference and needs
provide appropriate motivational strategies to the clients during the session
observe and analyse the clients performance and identify valid strategies to improve clients techniques
provide positive reinforcement of correct exercise performance to build self-confidence and self-efficacy
monitor the exercise environment to ensure clients safety and comfort
14. progress or regress exercises according to clients performance
allow sufficient time for the closing phase of the session
provide clients with feedback about their performance
17. explain to clients how their progress links to their short, medium and long term goals
provide clients the opportunity to ask questions about the session
discuss other possible activities and behaviour changes with clients that could assist them achieving their goals
leave the environment in a condition suitable for future use, following legal and organisational procedures
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- the current legislation, guidelines, policies, procedures and protocols which are relevant to your work practice and to which you must adhere
2. the principles of anatomy and physiology including skeletal, cardiovascular, myofascial, nervous, endocrine, energy and digestive system.
how to apply anatomy and physiology when delivering progressive programmes for a range of personal training clients.
the components of health and skill related fitness and how to apply these into a progressive programme of exercise to suit your clients' needs
the scope and professional boundaries of personal training a range of clients to include, but not limited to, pre and post-natal women, older adults, disabled people and young people.
the health benefits of physical activity and risks of inactivity
ways of identifying and preparing safe environments and self for the exercise session
ways of organising the environment to enable safe exercise performance
the correct procedures for checking equipment and dealing with any items that are unsafe
why you should meet the clients punctually and make them feel welcome
